The Position:
The Environmental Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient operation of the mill wastewater treatment system, including the activated sludge treatment system, as well as the storage, treatment, and land application of mill biosolids. The role also ensures that current and planned operational activities comply with applicable Provincial and Federal environmental regulations and supports the implementation and maintenance of the internal Environmental Management System.
Reporting to the Mill General Manager, the Environmental Supervisor also contributes to environmental planning, process review, regulatory coordination, annual budgeting, and operational decision-making. This position plays an important leadership role in helping the mill manage environmental risk, maintain compliance, and support long-term operational excellence.

Principal Responsibilities:
- Oversee the safe and efficient operation of the mill wastewater treatment system.
- Manage the storage, treatment, transportation, and land application of mill biosolids.
- Ensure all current and planned mill activities comply with applicable environmental legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Implement, maintain, and support the internal Environmental Management System.
- Participate in the review of new processes and chemicals to assess environmental impact and support the mill's chemical screening process.
- Develop, implement, and monitor procedures for sampling and analysis related to water discharges, air emissions, and solid residuals.
- Review and authorize routine environmental reports for government agencies and regulatory bodies.
- Act as a key contact with environmental regulators and related external agencies.
- Coordinate and support environmental studies, monitoring programs, and regulatory obligations, including Federal Environmental Effects Monitoring requirements.
- Identify opportunities related to energy conservation, recycling, and material reuse.
- Maintain the environmental laboratory, including equipment oversight and procurement of required chemicals and supplies.
- Assist with the environmental components of the mill emergency response plan and mill Health and Safety program.
- Plan and manage the annual operating budget for the Environmental Department.
- Provide input into capital expenditure planning, monitor departmental spending, and explain budget variances as required.
- Supervise assigned staff and coordinate the work of environmental contractors and consultants.
Scope of Responsibility:
- Reports to the Plant General Manager
- Manages 1 direct report
Experience/Qualifications
· A degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
· A minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental management and compliance
· Experience in paper manufacturing and/or wastewater treatment would be considered an asset
· Strong knowledge of environmental legislation, compliance practices, and regulatory reporting
· Experience working in an industrial or manufacturing environment
· Demonstrated ability to manage environmental systems, priorities, and deadlines effectively
· Strong budgeting, planning, and cost-control skills
· Effective communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to work across departments and with external agencies
· Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and database management tools
· Sound judgment, initiative, and a practical, solutions-focused approach
Working Environment
This position is performed both inside the mill and outdoors on mill property. The work environment may be consistently loud, dirty, and subject to seasonal temperature extremes, including hot summer and cold winter conditions. Limited out-of-town travel may also be required.
