We are looking for a hands-on Senior Accountant / Bookkeeper to co-own the accounting function and help ensure our financial information is accurate, complete, current, and useful to the business.
Reporting to the CFO, this role will be responsible for cost accounting, job costing, profitability analysis, reconciliations, financial recordkeeping, and supporting monthly and year-end close. This is an execution-focused role for someone who is detail-oriented, organized, accountable, and comfortable working through issues to get things right.
The Role
The Senior Accountant / Bookkeeper will play a key role in maintaining strong financial records and improving visibility into business performance. This person will be involved in both the accounting details and the financial analysis needed to understand job costs, margins, profitability, and operating results.
The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys taking ownership, is comfortable working in a hands-on environment, and understands that accurate accounting is essential to making good business decisions. This role requires someone who can manage the details, ask good questions, follow through, and help keep the accounting function disciplined and reliable.
Key Responsibilities
Cost Accounting & Job Costing
- Maintain accurate cost tracking by job, project, customer, division, or service line.
- Review labour, materials, equipment, subcontractor, and overhead costs to ensure they are captured correctly.
- Work with operations and management to improve the accuracy and consistency of job costing.
- Identify cost coding issues and help strengthen processes for recording costs properly.
- Support the development of useful cost reports that help the business understand job and service profitability.
- Help ensure project costs are complete, properly allocated, and recorded in the correct period.
Profitability Analysis & Reporting
- Prepare and review profitability analysis by job, customer, service line, crew, division, or other business segments as required.
- Help identify margin trends, cost overruns, underperforming work, and opportunities for improvement.
- Assist the CFO with financial reports and analysis that connect accounting results to business performance.
- Provide practical financial insights to support better operational decision-making.
- Help improve the quality, timeliness, and usefulness of internal financial reporting.
Monthly Close & Year-End Support
- Assist with monthly close activities to ensure financial results are accurate and completed on time.
- Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, prepaid expenses, revenue adjustments, and other close-related items.
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts and investigate differences or unusual balances.
- Support year-end preparation, including working papers, schedules, reconciliations, and documentation for external accountants.
- Help ensure the company’s financial records are ready for review, tax preparation, and reporting requirements.
Process Improvement & Internal Controls
- Help strengthen accounting processes, internal controls, and reporting procedures.
- Identify recurring issues and recommend practical improvements to reduce errors and improve efficiency.
- Support consistent accounting practices across departments and operational teams.
- Maintain accurate accounting files, schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
- Work with the CFO to improve systems, reporting, and financial visibility as the company continues to grow.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with the CFO, operations team, administrative staff, and management to ensure financial information is accurate and useful.
- Follow up with team members to obtain missing details, clarify transactions, and resolve accounting questions.
- Communicate clearly, professionally, and proactively when issues arise.
- Take ownership of assigned work and follow through until items are complete and correct.
What We Are Looking For
- Strong bookkeeping and accounting experience, ideally in a hands-on small or mid-sized business environment.
- Experience with cost accounting, job costing, project accounting, or profitability analysis.
- Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, accruals, and month-end processes.
- High attention to detail and a strong sense of ownership.
- Ability to identify errors, investigate discrepancies, and work through issues until they are resolved.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Comfortable working with both accounting details and operational information.
- Practical, solutions-oriented mindset.
- Clear communication skills and the confidence to ask questions when information is incomplete.
- Experience in landscaping, construction, trades, field services, or another job-costing environment would be an asset.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in accounting, bookkeeping, business, or a related field is preferred.
- Several years of progressive bookkeeping or accounting experience.
- Experience supporting monthly close, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Strong Excel skills and comfort working with accounting systems.
- CPA designation is not required, but accounting depth and practical experience are important.
- Experience with job costing, project costing, or cost allocation is strongly preferred.

Position Summary

Salary: $70,000 - $80,000 depending on qualifications.
