Position Overview:
The Generalist Boot Maker plays a key role in the production of high-quality, handcrafted boots. This role requires versatility across multiple stages of the boot making process - from cutting and stitching to lasting and finishing – with a commitment to precision, craftsmanship, and efficiency. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, takes pride in traditional techniques, and adapts quickly to shifting production priorities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform a range of boot making tasks including cutting, skiving, stitching, lasting, sole attachment, and finishing.
- Follow established patterns, templates, and quality specifications for each style.
- Operate and maintain production machinery and hand tools used in leather boot manufacturing.
- Inspect materials and components before and during assembly to ensure quality standards are met.
- Ensure finished boots meet brand standards for fit, durability, and overall aesthetic quality.
- Identify and report defects, inconsistencies, or equipment issues promptly.
- Support multiple stages of production to meet daily and weekly output targets.
- Participate in cross-training to maintain production flexibility and team efficiency.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workstation in accordance with safety guidelines.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with bootmakers, pattern cutters, and production leads to support smooth workflow and continuous improvement.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Experience in footwear manufacturing, leatherworking, or a related craft/trade environment.
- Proficiency operating hand tools and industrial sewing machines.
- Strong attention to detail with a demonstrated commitment to quality craftsmanship.
- Knowledge of leather types, treatments, and footwear construction methods.
- Experience with Western or heritage boot styles considered an asset.
- Ability to read and interpret technical specifications, patterns, and production drawings.
- Excellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.
- Physically capable of lifting up to 25 kg (55 lbs) occasionally.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced production environment with machinery, adhesives, and dyes.
- Adaptable and willing to learn different production stages as required.
