Located in Saskatoon. Primary Purpose: To provide research assistance and project delivery to the Native Law Centre Research Department in the area of Indigenous and Criminal Law. Nature of Work: The Department is currently seeking a full-time Research Officer for a 1-year term. The Research Officer will work under the direction of the Native Law Centre’s Academic Director and will be responsible for administering the Gladue Awareness Project (“Project”).

The Project is a knowledge sharing program designed to reach people working in Saskatchewan’s justice system. The Research Officer must have sound knowledge of the relevant case law, the history of Gladue, Gladue factors, and experience writing Gladue reports. The Project aims to raise awareness of Gladue sentencing principles and the Research Officer will seek seminar attendance from judges, defense lawyers, crown prosecutors, probation officers, etc., throughout Saskatchewan. The Research Officer will be required to actively coordinate seminars, create and administer brochures/posters, and collect and analyze the Project’s data (qualitative, quantitative, survey, etc.).

The Project will take place over a 12-month period and will involve seminars, dialogue concerning Gladue resources specific to Saskatchewan, and the wide dissemination of this information through various communication channels. The Research Officer must be willing to travel and will have proven experience in public speaking. The Research Officer will work independently and collaboratively in a variety of environments to ensure successful delivery of the Project. Attention to detail, excellent public speaking skills, diligence, focus on quality, relatedness, collaborative mind set, and drive are necessary to ensure success in the position.

Accountabilities: Research Development Data preparation (brochures, seminar outlines, PowerPoint, etc.) and application of legal expertise and knowledge of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system Analysis and report preparation of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods data Develops research presentations and posters for seminar attendees Assist with data collection, as needed Filling in knowledge gaps and taking advantage of research opportunities by seeking out literature, knowledge experts, etc. to support ongoing research and assisting with further developing the Gladue Awareness Project. Support database research by seeking out databases and data depositories & collaborate with provincial and national organizations to work on securing required data, data clean up, analysis, and reporting. Assume primary responsibility for extracting and analyzing data gathered from Project seminars.

Research Coordination Coordinate and manage the Gladue Awareness Project, including term/final reports Coordinate Project-related activities and events, including, but not limited to research meetings, poster presentations, etc. With the direction from the Academic Director, work on implementing strategic initiatives to foster a collaborative research community in the department Communication, Organization, and Project and Time Management Work collaboratively with other departments and units across campus and in the community by establishing and maintaining excellent working relationships with colleagues Provide necessary work outputs in a timely manner as requested and required Actively follow up on the Project’s reporting guidelines, ensuring timely flow of the research cycle Effectively establish work scope, timelines, work plans, and accountabilities for self to ensure quality and clarity of scope for projects Work with the Native Law Centre to ensure the success of the Project Set priorities, deliver outcomes in a timely manner and set/manage feasible expectations with collaborators Qualifications: Education: A minimum LL.B. or J.D. degree is required (or equivalent experience in the justice field), with extensive understanding of Gladue reports and Gladue sentencing principles.

Experience writing Gladue reports/Gladue sentencing submissions would be considered an asset. If the candidate is or has been a member of any Law Society, the candidate must be a member in good standing. Experience: Two to five years of experience working in a research environment; prior experience in legal research, research processes (including question development, design, data collection, analysis and knowledge dissemination), project development and project administration. Skills: Excellent interpersonal communication (verbal, written) skills; demonstrated ability to take initiative and work collaboratively with academic and administrative staff, demonstrated sound judgment and confident decision making; effective planning and organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple projects; well-developed analytical skills; ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy; proven proficient computer application skills including work processing, spreadsheets and databases; and the ability to use web-based communication software.
