The Opportunity:
The Director, Supervision is a frontline supervision role responsible for daily compliance reviews for Manulife Private Wealth (MPW) advisors registered with the Canadian securities commissions. The role is responsible for designing and implementing an effective and efficient compliance supervision framework to protect clients, MPW Investment Counsellors and MPW. The incumbent will execute complex reviews, manage escalations, and work with Compliance to provide training and guidance to advisors and other MPW staff as needed.
The Director, Supervision will partner closely with Line 2 Compliance to ensure adherence to securities regulations and internal policies.
This is a hybrid role three days a week in the office.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for oversight of Investment Counsellors’ trading activities.
- Test new account approvals and KYC updates.
- Communicate with advisor teams regarding compliance inquiries.
- Assist as needed with investigations related to complaints and regulatory inquiries.
- Assist the firm in resolving compliance issues with respect to regulatory guidelines and interpretation of regulations.
Perform annual branch reviews to foster meaningful and collaborative relationships between Investment Counsellors and compliance.

Supervision & Complex Reviews:
- Perform trade, suitability, and exception reviews; review new account approvals and KYC updates.
- Handle complex supervisory items (e.g., vulnerable clients, outside activities, conflicts of interest, advertising).
- Document decisions with clear rationale and evidence; ensure timely closure of exceptions.
- Monitor KRIs/KPIs (e.g., exception rates, cycle time, remediation closure) and drive continuous improvement.
Identify and escalate any areas of non-compliance.

Investment Counsellor Support & Training:
- Provide training and education to Investment Counsellors on supervisory expectations and best practices.
- Conduct onsite visits to advisor offices to review processes, remediate gaps, and reinforce controls.
- Communicate clearly and constructively with Investment Counsellors, management and Compliance to resolve issues.
Support Investment Counsellors with post-audit remediation plans.

Issue Management & Escalation:
- Identify, investigate, and assist with complaint reviews and regulatory inquiries.
- Escalate significant non-compliance to the Chief Compliance Officer; support remediation plans.
Contribute to thematic reviews and process improvements.

Cross-Functional Partnership:
- Partner with Compliance, Risk, Legal, and Operations to address supervisory challenges and align practices.
- Participate in audits/exams by preparing documentation and responding to requests.
Support the roll-out of policy changes and new supervisory or business tools and communication.

Qualifications:
- 5-7+ years of Portfolio Manager compliance related experience.
- Completion of CSC an asset.
- Organizational and prioritization skills to be able to work in a multitasking environment.
- Strong knowledge of the financial services industry, the Canadian securities regulatory framework, provincial securities legislation.
- Exceptional communication, stakeholder management, negotiation, and influence skills.
- Strong analytical judgment with experience handling complex escalations and remediation.
- Highly developed conflict resolution skills
- Comfortable making presentations to groups.
Bilingual English/French an asset.

Bilingualism (English and French) is an asset. If the successful candidate is in Québec, proficiency in both languages will be required to support clients from various provinces outside of Quebec.

Salary range is expected to be between
$92,900.00 CAD - $142,900.00 CAD
