What Would You Do?
As a Veterinary Technician at OMHS, you will play a crucial role in providing exceptional care to animals. The Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) is responsible for all aspects of medical care and support for shelter animals. Collaborating with Animal Care Attendants, the RVT ensures the welfare of animals aligns with OMHS protocols. The ideal candidate for this role is someone who possesses strong organizational skills and the ability to make informed decisions about animal health, while ensuring humane treatment and minimal stress for all animals. Based on this, an outline of the key responsibilities of the role have been outlined below.
- Provide daily care and support and administer medications orally, topically or by injection, in addition to performing basic laboratory skills like preparing laboratory samples, phlebotomy, cystocentesis, and reading cytology for both wild and domestic animals
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of animal characteristics and information at animal intake
- Perform euthanasia procedures as required
- Liaise between the shelter and community vets to schedule surgeries, manage disease outbreak or otherwise as needed
- Assist with animal intake and coordinate vet appointments as needed
- Ensure strict adherence to health and safety policies and procedures
- Maintain meticulous records, including medical records, drug and vaccine logs, foster files, wildlife documentation, and financial records
- Ensure all animals have up to date vaccinations based on shelter protocols
- Contribute expertise to the adoptions, foster care, and perform euthanasia processes as required
- Collaborate with Animal Protection Services to address and remedy suspected cruelty or abuse cases
- Act as a resource for health-related inquiries from the public, staff, volunteers, and foster families, directing them to the appropriate contacts for public health concerns
- Stay informed about developments in animal welfare and industry practices
- Collaborate with wildlife rehab centres to determine next steps and plans.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Animal Health Technician or Veterinary Technician Diploma, Registered Veterinary Technician Designation is considered an asset
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a humane shelter or relevant equivalent Proficiency in recognizing disease symptoms and safe animal handling
- Proven experience thriving in a fast-paced environment
- Exhibit confidence and skill in handling animals of diverse temperaments
- Microsoft Suite proficient
- Preferably possesses a valid G Class license
- Be willing and reliable to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays and overtime as necessary
- Outstanding organizational and time management skills
- Expert in both written and verbal communication, with strong interpersonal skills
- Able to work independently and exercise discretion when performing tasks
- Display genuine compassion for animals and people.

Salary Range: $23.69/hour + Benefits
Schedule: 35 hours/week (On Site)

This role involves a degree of physical activity, including lifting animals of various weights, prolonged standing or walking, and the ability to work effectively in noisy environments, as well as adapting to any other situations that may arise.
This position also entails working in an animal shelter environment, where you will have regular exposure to a variety of species and sizes of animals. Candidates should be comfortable and prepared to work in close proximity to them.
