Nature and Scope of Work
Capilano University invites applications for an educational developer with an online and educational technology focus to support faculty in developing and enhancing teaching and learning. The Centre for Teaching Excellence (CTE) fosters excellence, innovation, and collaboration in teaching and learning by supporting faculty and staff though programming, mentoring, professional development opportunities, and research on effective teaching practices for student learning. This is a 75% time appointment.

The incumbent will report to the Director, Centre for Teaching Excellence and will assist faculty with technology-enhanced pedagogical practices that are learning-centered and collaborative. The ideal candidate is flexible, positive and works well in a collaborative team environment. In this role, the candidate will promote excellence and innovation in teaching and learning while carrying out the following responsibilities:

  • Plan, implement and evaluate educational development programs for faculty across the university, with an emphasis on digital technology including online learning and technology-enhanced learning, effective teaching, ePortfolios, experiential learning, and other priority areas as they are evolved by faculty and supported by the university
  • Consult and advise faculty on pedagogically sound uses of educational technologies that support instructor goals, learning outcomes, and student success
  • Support faculty in designing, developing and facilitating online, blended, and hybrid courses
  • Create resources to support faculty in using educational technologies including Moodle to enhance student learning
  • Provide on-going support for the University ePortfolio program including developing resources and workshops for faculty and students on creating ePortfolios, Folio thinking, and developing ePortfolios at the individual, course, and program level. Liaise with and provide oversight for ePortfolio Faculty Associates
  • Organize an annual student ePortfolio showcase
  • Support faculty in developing, reusing, and remixing Open Educational Resources (OER)
  • Consult and advise faculty in curriculum development according to evidence-based best practices for student learning such as high impact educational practices
  • Assist in the delivery and programming of a Certificate Program in University Teaching and new faculty workshops.
  • Advise faculty in effective and innovative teaching practices through formal and informal individual and group consultations, resource creation, and workshop and institute delivery
  • Deliver and provide direction for professional development programs and events for faculty and staff including the Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW), new faculty orientations, identified workshops for seasoned faculty, and course design workshops
  • Participate in the development of scholarly activities related to educational technology outcome
  • Work with faculty on specific course-related needs (e.g., designing and using rubrics, active learning strategies, and assessment)
  • Collaborate with institutional units on teaching-related initiatives and programs (e.g., UDL)
  • Disseminate and promote knowledge on teaching and learning
  • Supports new projects as requested by the Director, Centre for Teaching Excellence
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Master’s degree in Education or a related field
  • Prior experience teaching at the post-secondary level
  • 2 years’ experience working in educational and faculty development at the post-secondary level
  • Experience facilitating workshops for faculty on technology-enabled learning
  • Experience working with OERs (preferred, but not required)
  • Knowledge of current educational technologies used in both the online and traditional classroom environment
  • Demonstrated skills in teaching and educational development abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional technologies and design theories and practices and application of best practices in the use of technologies in teaching and learning in post-secondary education
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate diplomatically and effectively with a diverse group of faculty, administrators and staff individually and in group settings in written and verbal communications
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, develop and provide workshops through campus partnerships
  • Demonstrated skills in facilitation and presentation of workshops
  • Knowledge and expertise in Moodle, eportfolios, Google tools, mobile learning, assessment technologies
  • Strong computer skills, including a high degree of facility in the use of all Microsoft Office applications, are required
  • Demonstrated organizational and self-management skills including time management and the ability to prioritize, multi-task and attend to detail
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment, manage time well, and communicate effectively with supervisors, peers, and staff while taking a service-oriented approach and consultative decision-making
