POSITION SUMMARY

**Covering a 12 month maternity leave**

Under the direction of the Manager of Nursing, provides nutrition and dietetic services to the clientele of Stoney community in consultation, coordination and collaboration with the interdisciplinary health care team, based on the expectations and needs of the community/clientele; provides high quality, cost efficient dietary and nutritional services to assist clients in protection, restoration and promotion of health, to prevent and reduce the incidence of disease, disability, and death; applies the science of nutrition and dietetics in the teaching and counselling of clients in both health and disease; and performs other related duties.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides professional dietary and nutritional services to clients while adhering to the standards of good practice of nutrition and dietetics
  • Consults with physicians and diabetic educator, and health care personnel to determine nutritional needs and diet restrictions of clients
  • Performs nutrition screening for clients and offers advice on diet-related concerns, such as weight loss and cholesterol reduction
  • Assesses and evaluates clients’ nutritional needs, diet restrictions and current health plans to develop and implement dietary/nutritional care plans, instructs clients and their families, provides counselling, and evaluates and reports the results
  • Advises clients and their families on nutritional principles, dietary plans and diet modifications, and food selection and preparation
  • Counsels individuals and groups, including pre-natal and post-natal mothers, on basic rules of good nutrition, healthy eating habits, and nutrition monitoring to improve their quality of life
  • Conducts weight management programs for overweight clients or in the care of renal, diabetic, critically ill or other chronically ill clients
  • Provides instruction on grocery shopping and food preparation to the elderly, children, and individuals with special needs
  • Analyzes food, prepares literature for distribution, or reports on issues such as dietary fiber, vitamin supplements, or the nutritional content of recipes
  • Promotes healthy eating habits and recommends dietary modifications for clients
  • Conducts educational and counselling programs for individuals and groups, including pre-natal and post-natal mothers, on nutritional practices designed to prevent disease and promote health
  • Develops curriculum and prepares manuals, visual aids, course outlines, and other materials used in teaching
  • Consults with food service managers, providing expertise in sanitation, safety procedures, menu development, budgeting, and planning to assist with the establishment, operation, and evaluation of food service facilities and nutrition programs
  • Develops policies for food service or nutritional programs to assist in health promotion and disease control
  • Plans and conducts training programs in dietetics, nutrition, institutional management and administration for health care personnel, schools, and the general public
  • Makes recommendations regarding public policy, such as nutrition labelling, food fortification, and nutrition standards for school programs
  • Provides nutrition support to post-surgical clients who require feeding to enhance their recovery
  • Interprets, applies, participates in or generates research to enhance practice
  • Plans, conducts, evaluates dietary, nutritional, and epidemiological research
  • Coordinates and collaborates with the Diabetic Educator to conduct an out-patient clinic for clients with diabetes
  • Coordinates and collaborates with the Community Health Nurses to conduct pre-natal nutrition programs and activities
  • Conducts home visits in collaboration with the interdisciplinary health care personnel
  • Participates in Stoney Health Center activities and program, quality improvement and accreditation initiatives
  • Promotes a safe and healthy environment at homes, day care centers, schools, work sites, and the community
  • Participates in occupational health and safety activities
  • Promotes a safe and healthy environment in the workplace and in the community
  • Performs other related duties as required

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor’s degree in Dietetics from an accredited university and successful passing of a board examination in nutrition and dietetics
  • A minimum of one year (two years) of experience in the application of theories of nutrition and dietetics in an acute care hospital or community health setting
  • Li censure, Certification, or Registration with the Dietitians of Canada and/or the College of Dietitians of Alberta, or the International Confederation of Dietetic Associations
  • Cardio-Pulmonary (CPR) Certification
  • Current Driver’s License and a Good Driving Record
