The Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) is established under the province's Post-Secondary LearningAct (PSLA) as a corporate entity separate from the University of Alberta (UofA) with a seat in the UofA Board of Governors. The GSA is a proactive, efficient, and transparent student-led and professionally- managed non-profit organization, which is a representative of, and an advocate for about 8,400 graduate students at the UofA.
The University of Alberta Graduate Students' Association (UofA GSA) is seeking a skilled PART time Finance and HR Manager to support the Executive Director (ED). This role is 22 hours a week, 3 days a week. Finance and HR Manager to oversees the financial and human resources functions of our organization. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in both finance and human resources, with specific experience in payroll management, HR policies, and compliance. The Finance and HR Manager will work closely with the Executive Director , Accountant and Associate Director to ensure the smooth operation of the GSA's financial and HR activities.
The GSA is currently seeking
Key areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:
Financial Management:
- Support the accountant with the day-to-day financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
- Support the accountant with accounts payable and receivable, ensuring timely payments and accurate records.
- Support the accountant with preparing and present financial reports to the Executive Director and GSA Board and Council.
- Upholding compliance with university financial policies and relevant legislation.
Payroll Management:
- Administer biweekly payroll processes, ensuring accurate and timely payment of salaries and wages.
- Manage employee benefits and ensuring compliance with university and statutory regulations.
- Handle payroll-related inquiries and resolve any issues that arise.
Human Resources Management:
- Develop and implement HR policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with university policies and legal requirements.
- Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and employee development programs.
- Manage employee relations, including conflict resolution, performance management, and disciplinary actions.
- Ensure a positive and inclusive workplace culture.
- Integrate a new HR software, project management of this implementation.
- Compliance and Risk Management:
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, including employment laws, tax regulations, and university policies.
- Manage risk by maintaining accurate and up-to-date records, working with auditors, and ensuring proper internal controls.
- Oversee health and safety initiatives within the workplace.
Qualifications needed:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field desirable.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in finance and HR management, with specific experience in payroll administration.
- Strong applied knowledge of Canadian HR laws, regulations, and best practices.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Software Proficiency: The ideal candidate should be proficient in the following software:
- QuickBooks or Sage 50 (for accounting and financial management)
- ADP Workforce Now or Ceridian Dayforce (for payroll management)
- Microsoft Excel (for financial reporting and analysis)
- BambooHR or Workday (for HR management and employee records)
- Zoom, Teams or Google meet
Compensation & Benefits
GSA offers a competitive compensation and benefit program which includes the following, subject to GSA’s terms and provisions:
▪ Annual salary increase in line with CPI subject to Board’s approval of the operating budget

▪Vacation time includes three paid weeks/year and eligibility for up to ten paid sick days annually.

Salary ranges is $38-42 an hour plus an 8% monthly benefit and a 11% RRSP monthly payment. This role is PART TIME 22 hours a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). In person no remote option
