Position Summary
This is a senior all-rounder role for a carpenter who can triage, execute, and mentor. You’ll be the person we send when a customer calls and the answer isn’t obvious — a ceiling that’s sagging, a finish that’s failing, water damage of unknown scope, a TI that needs a thoughtful sequence. You’ll diagnose the real problem, propose the right fix, and either execute it yourself or lead a small crew to do it. You don’t need to be a formal foreman or project manager (though you should be capable of running both when needed). You do need to be the carpenter our junior staff turn to when they’re stuck — and the one we trust to make decisions on site that we don’t need to second-guess from the office.
What You’ll Do
- Service-call triage: attend customer sites, diagnose the underlying problem (not just the symptom), scope the work, and quote or recommend the right solution
- Execute the full carpentry spectrum hands-on: framing, drywall hang/board, taping and mudding (Level 4 / Level 5 finish), tile setting and prep, ceiling grid and tile, doors and hardware, millwork and finish carpentry, repairs and patching
- Lead a small crew on multi-day jobs — sequence the work, assign tasks, set the quality bar, and keep the schedule
- Mentor junior carpenters, apprentices, and labourers — teach by doing, explain why, and build their skill so we can scale the team
- Run Field Level Hazard Assessments, lead toolbox talks, and own site-specific safety compliance under our SECOR-certified safety program
- Communicate clearly with customers on site — represent Palladio professionally, manage expectations, and escalate to the General Manager when something is out of scope
- Provide accurate material take-offs, labour estimates, and progress reporting to the General Manager and project team
- Quality-control your own work and the work of the crew — we deliver finished work we’re willing to put our name on
- Step into working foreman or project lead duties when the job calls for it; step back into hands-on execution when it doesn’t
What You BringRequired — Competence (formal cert OR equivalent experience)
- Either: Alberta Journeyman Carpenter certificate (Red Seal endorsement strongly preferred), OR 10–15+ years of hands-on construction experience that demonstrates equivalent competence — we care about what you can actually do, not just the paper
- All-rounder skill set: you’re confident framing, hanging and finishing drywall, taping and mudding to Level 4/5, setting tile, installing ceiling systems, hanging doors, and producing clean finish carpentry
- Service-work mindset: you can walk into a job blind, ask the right questions, find the root cause, and propose a fix that actually solves the problem
- Comfortable leading 1–4 people on a job, including scheduling the day, sequencing the work, and signing off on quality
- Strong communicator with customers, office staff, and the crew — written and verbal
Required — Tickets, Transportation, Documents
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence with a clean driver’s abstract
- Reliable personal transportation to get to and from worksites and service calls — public transit will not provide the flexibility this role requires. Mileage for work-related travel between sites is reimbursed at CRA-recommended rates
- Current Fall Protection, WHMIS 2015, Standard First Aid
- CSTS-2020 (or equivalent construction safety orientation)
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Clean criminal record check (required for some institutional client sites)
Nice to Have
