One of our clients, a locally owned, family run chain of auto parts stores, is searching for a hands-on and experienced Controller to oversee their financial operations. The successful candidate will manage the financial planning, forecasting, and the development and maintenance of accounting policies and procedures. The Controller will manage accounting practices, manage relationships with lending institutions and the financial community, maintain fiscal records, and prepare, analyze and disseminate financial reports on a timely basis to the owner. This position also involves supervision over general accounting, internal controls, asset management, cost accounting, and budgetary controls.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Financial Analysis & Reporting:
- Oversee transactional accounting functions, preparation of monthly financial reporting packages, project analysis, manage the short and long-term financial forecasts; institute planning and control procedures; and analyze and report on variances;
- Conduct comprehensive financial analysis to assess company performance and identify areas for improvement;
- Develop, implement and monitor key performance indicators (KPI’s) to track the company’s financial and operational performance against strategic goals and objectives;
- Liaise with external tax planners and oversee the accounting department to ensure compliance with federal and provincial taxes, payroll remittances, and other applicable taxes;
- Provide financial advice and guidance to business unit leaders, including relevant financial analysis and project reporting;
- Present financial reports to key stakeholders and provide recommendations based on trends; and
- Communicate financial results to all stakeholders.
Financial Policy and Control:
- Develop, implement and maintain the accounting policy and procedures;
- Review, modify, communicate and monitor internal controls throughout the organization;
- Maintain strong controls on inventory and other corporate assets;
- Institute policy and procedure documentation for complex financial and accounting issues;
- Maintain current knowledge of regulatory changes and impacts to the organization;
- Oversee and support accounting team to ensure optimal performance and compliance with accounting policies, standards and current legislation; and
- Maintain the corporate minute books and shareholder agreements including but not limited to shareholder loan balances.
Acquisitions and Divestitures:
- Develop and evaluate the financial modeling process to ensure reliability and reasonability of projections and likelihood of achievement of company investment goals; and
- Work with other professionals (legal, etc.) on the detailed elements of acquisitions.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands-on full cycle accounting experience in strategic financial management, analysis and forecasting;
- Previous experience in wholesale/retail businesses and advanced knowledge of ERP software would be an asset.
- Supervisory experience in leading and managing the accounting department;
- Proficient Microsoft aptitude - excellent working knowledge of MS Word and Excel;
- Detail-oriented and ability to manage stress while working under tight deadlines;
- Strong communication skills and experience dealing with difficult conversations;
- Customer-service oriented and strong interpersonal skills;
- Self-starter, good organizational, time management and prioritizing skills;
- Ability to follow through and complete overlapping projects;
- Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills;
