Job Summary:
Inlailawatash is looking for Apprentice Utility Arborists (level 1 or 2) that can perform a variety of skilled arboriculture tasks, which might include tree risk assessments, tree climbing, hazard tree removals, Bucket truck operation and assistance with all aspects of Utility Vegetation Management work, primarily in North Vancouver, Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton. As well as various projects spanning across BC. An Apprentice Utility Arborist assists with utility vegetation management crews and contractors engaged in the removal of vegetation from proximity to high voltage electrical conductors. Considerable independence, Safety conscious, ability to follow instructions and demonstrate proper judgement, is exercised as part of this job.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist experienced arborists in tree risk assessments, inspects sites and trees for damage and hazards, perform job estimating, tree inventories, and tree appraisals, and prepares arborists reports.
- Inspects and identifies diseased trees or trees posing an actual or potential hazard to public safety; determines required treatment; undertakes emergency control action as required.
- Works closely with the TWN’s Public Works Manager and TWN’s contractors engaged in construction and land development work that takes place on TWN’s Reserve#3 as well as on lands governed by the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations (MST Development Corporation).
- Performs physically demanding manual labor in various weather conditions. Chipping debris, utilize chainsaws, ropes and rigging.
- Assists in site set-up and take-down, including equipment handling and maintaining site cleanliness.
- Perform additional duties as required or assigned.
- Safely operates tools and equipment associated with arboriculture work including operating an aerial lift truck, pruning, climbing, rigging, cabling, and felling.
- Occasionally performs tree climbing/aerial lift activities to undertake required tree maintenance work.
- Works collaboratively with the Vegetation & Tree Services Manager to manage and coordinate all key areas of the Vegetation Management program, including Utility Vegetation Management:
Education/Experience
- Completion of a diploma in Horticulture, Arboriculture, Landscape Architecture, or a related field, BC Utility Arborist level 1 or 2 plus sound related experience, or an equivalent combination of training or experience.
- Willing to work towards becoming a certified utility arborist.
- Interest in First Nations cultural and environmental values and stewardship is ; past work with First Nations is considered a definite asset.
- Experience working in a team environment, especially in a physical outdoor industry
- Relevant professional designation considered an asset
- Current clean Class 5 Drivers license with air brakes endorsement
Technical Skills
- Strong planning and organizational skills, detail oriented
- Fair knowledge and understanding of the Utility Vegetation Management
- Ability to perform Tree Risk Assessments
- Fair knowledge and understanding of Tree Biology
- Strong awareness of the importance of safety; ability to develop and implement safety protocols and procedures in coordination with work crews
- Experience using Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Project)

Travel: Travel will be required for meetings or training and fieldwork.
Working Hours: 40 hours a week

Compensation: $28 - $36.00 per hour
