SUMMARY
Reporting into the Engineering Manager, the Assistant Surveyor is responsible for supporting field surveying, data collection, and materials testing activities to ensure accurate site measurements and compliance with project requirements. This role plays a critical part in construction and geotechnical operations and works closely with survey teams, field technicians, and engineering staff.
PRIMARY SCOPE OF ROLE
- Assist in the setup, calibration, and operation of surveying equipment such as Total Stations, GNSS/GPS receivers, and digital levels.
- Capture precise measurements of distances, angles, and elevations to define property boundaries and site topography.
- Install various control points and monuments as needed.
- Maintain clear, organized field notes and sketches; download and organize digital data for processing.
- Perform surveying duties as instructed by Surveying Lead or designated Supervisor
- Ensure all equipment is properly maintained and safely transported. Adhere to all site-specific health and safety regulations.
- Assist with the preparation of survey plans, CAD drawings, and legal descriptions under the supervision of a licensed surveyor.
- Assist with field technician duties within other functions of the business including but not limited to materials testing (asphalt, aggregates, soils and concrete) and inspections.
- Field testing to include sampling, coring and compaction of various materials.
- Assist in proper care, control and maintenance of testing equipment.
- Follow all company and regulatory safety policies and procedures.
- Assist when required with Geotechnical investigations.
- Complete reports and checklists as per company policies and/or contract requirements and advise supervisors of any non-conformances and deviations.
- Assist with Laboratory testing of materials when required.
- Perform other duties as instructed.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Geomatics, Surveying, or related field.
- 1–3 years of experience in construction surveying or monitoring (preferred).
- Familiarity with survey instruments and monitoring equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors on construction sites.
- Basic understanding of survey software and data processing tools.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or survey processing software.
- Work may involve travel to project sites and outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
WHAT WE OFFER
- Expected Base Salary: $22.00 - $26.00 per year. The actual base salary will depend on several factors including experience, qualifications, internal equity, work location and market expectations.
