What you can expect in a typical day

As a Senior Inspector at Canada’s largest oil refinery, you will lead an inspection team for day-to-day execution activities. This includes site coordination of area inspection teams, inspection scope development and review for fixed equipment. You will also steward the compliance of jurisdictional requirements for pressure vessel operating certificates, pressure safety valves (PSVs), etc.


Coordinate inspection of refinery plant equipment to ensure integrity and reliability.
Supervise contract NDE Technicians, Co-op Students and mentor more junior inspectors.
Calculate accurate corrosion rates and remaining life calculations of terminal and bulk plant, Pressure equipment and Piping as defined by API methodologies.
Evaluate, predict and schedule replacement of terminal and bulk plant equipment.
Contribute to the development of equipment shutdown priorities.
At times will be assigned Asset Integrity Execution Group Lead responsibilities.
Lead projects with broad scope in own discipline with potential long-term focus.
Independently make decisions with mid to long term impact in own area and/or business line.
Solves complex and ambiguous problems within all inspection areas of expertise. Consider larger impact of problem on own work area.
Prepare Inspection Reports. Consider peer review of reports prior to distribution.
Perform audits of vendors and fabricators to ensure compliance with Irving Oil and industry codes, standards, and specifications, along with jurisdictional regulations for projects, including capital projects.

What you’ll need to succeed

Strong knowledge of all types of fixed equipment, piping, and associated inspection activities.
Strong knowledge of Industry Recommended Practices and Codes and Standards (Internal, ASME, API etc.).
Solid knowledge and awareness of Damage Mechanisms (API 571) and processes within the petroleum industry.
Thorough understanding of RBI (API 581) and FFS Evaluation Techniques (API 579).

Specific computer applications:
Development of comprehensive and compliant inspection plans.
Able to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
Proactive in identifying asset integrity related risk.
Strong contributor to the Asset Integrity Group.


Travel is not a requirement for this role.

Education and experience

8-20 years of experience with all types of fixed equipment, piping, and associated inspection activities.
Minimum 10 years of experience with developing inspection plans for an industrial environment.
Project management experience.
Budget management experience.
Strong knowledge of applicable API codes.
