Bookkeeper / Accountant – Real Estate & Construction Project Management

We are looking for a highly experienced and hands-on Bookkeeper/Accountant with significant construction project management experience to join our team.
Construction experience is a key requirement for this position. The ideal candidate will have a strong accounting background combined with proven experience overseeing construction projects from start to finish. This includes coordinating contractors and trades, monitoring project budgets and expenses, reviewing invoices and change orders, tracking project progress, and ensuring projects stay organized and financially on track.
Job Responsibilities Construction Project Oversight – Major Responsibility
- Oversee and coordinate construction, renovation, and property improvement projects from beginning to completion
- Work directly with general contractors, subcontractors, trades, suppliers, architects, engineers, and other project professionals
- Monitor construction progress, schedules, budgets, and project costs
- Review and verify contractor and supplier invoices, purchase orders, and payment requests
- Track project expenses and ensure costs are properly allocated to the appropriate property and project
- Review change orders and identify unexpected costs or potential budget overruns
- Monitor project budgets and provide regular updates on costs and financial performance
- Identify discrepancies, delays, cost overruns, or other issues and bring them to management's attention
- Maintain organized documentation for construction projects, including contracts, invoices, change orders, receipts, and payment records
- Coordinate with contractors and vendors to ensure work is progressing according to expectations
- Assist with obtaining quotes, comparing contractor pricing, and coordinating project-related purchases
- Help ensure projects remain on schedule and within approved budgets
- Assist management with evaluating project costs and making informed decisions regarding renovations and capital improvements
Accounting & Bookkeeping
- Maintain and update financial records using QuickBooks Online
- Process accounts payable and accounts receivable and perform monthly reconciliations
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports
- Track and reconcile construction and renovation project expenses
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
- Oversee payroll and ensure compliance with relevant regulations
- Support tax preparation and work with external accountants as needed
- Ensure accurate financial reporting for properties and construction projects
- Perform additional bookkeeping, accounting, and administrative tasks as required
Requirements
Construction experience is essential for this position. Candidates without meaningful hands-on experience overseeing construction or renovation projects will not be considered.
- 3+ years of bookkeeping or accounting experience
- Significant experience overseeing construction, renovation, or property improvement projects
- Demonstrated experience managing construction budgets, project costs, invoices, and contractor payments
- Experience coordinating and communicating directly with contractors, subcontractors, trades, and suppliers
- Strong understanding of construction processes, timelines, materials, and project costs
- Experience reviewing construction invoices, contracts, change orders, and estimates
- Real estate industry experience is required
- Proficiency in QuickBooks Online is required
- Strong knowledge of general accounting principles and financial reporting
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple construction projects and accounting responsibilities simultaneously
- Strong communication and negotiation skills
- Ability to identify problems, follow up with contractors/vendors, and ensure issues are resolved
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage projects with minimal supervision
- Ability to handle sensitive financial information with integrity and confidentiality
