MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- High school completion required.
EXPERIENCE:
- Four years of directly-related experience is required.
- Experience working with students and providing instruction in an academic environment is essential.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Basic knowledge of cutting and joinery techniques required.
- Basic knowledge of building and construction practices is required.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential.
- Ability to safely use relevant equipment required.
- Ability and willingness to learn new techniques required.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team is essential.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
- Provides assistance to shop users on equipment use and various materials construction techniques.
- Assists with building projects on-going in the shop including providing technical advice on basic techniques (joinery techniques, best types of materials for specific projects, etc), proper use of tools and creative methods relative to the type of design work the student/user requires.
- Assist the Fabrication Facilities Coordinator (as assigned) with maintenance of the multi-shop environment.
- Advises students in cost estimating for project materials, construction time, etc. – requires knowledge of materials, availability, etc.
- Assist the Fabrication Facilities coordinator and/or tool coordinator with general maintenance of equipment, which requires general knowledge of electrical equipment repair as well as installation of blades (tension, proper blade for specific type of material, etc).
- Under the direction of the Fabrication Facilities Coordinator, construct, install and maintain millwork and other furnishings and objects for the faculty, facilities, and partners. Will be required to follow shop drawings or written directions in this regard.
- Ensures safety protocols are followed by users of the shop and adjacent work areas at all times – requires specific knowledge of use of equipment such as table saws, planers, etc as well as use of protective equipment such as proper footwear, eyewear, etc.
- Ensures work environments are safe for use by staff and students.
- May restrict use of specific equipment by staff and students as necessary to ensure safety.
- Retains authority to remove anyone from the shop environment that does not adhere to the policies and procedures which govern the use of the shop.
- Takes initiative to better develop and understand new fabrication techniques including the integration of digital fabrication, to better advise students and faculty on current best practices.
- May be required to support projects in various spaces/facilities for the Faculty of Architecture, including CAST.
- Other duties as assigned.
