This is accomplished across four geographic management zones which are responsible for the operation of acute care health centres and the provision of a variety of inpatient, outpatient services including academic, tertiary, quaternary care and community-based programs and services including continuing care, primary health care, public health, and mental health and addictions.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Division Head, the Clinical Assistant functions as a member of the Cardiology team, liaising with pharmacy staff, nursing, house staff, attending staff, patient’s families and other members of the health care team in the development and implementation of the overall patient care plan both in the inpatient and outpatient settings on a daily basis. Clinical responsibilities will include but are not limited to completing admissions, providing daily assessment and active management of inpatients including writing medical orders on charts, handling of urgent or emergent situations, arranging consultations with other departments for care, laboratory and radiologic investigations; minor procedures and discharge summaries. Performs procedures within the scope of his/her demonstrated competence and privileges and according to established policies or protocols. These may include: the insertion of peripheral intravenous lines, initiation of intravenous medication, taking blood samples for diagnostic purposes or arterial blood gases, insertion of Foley catheters, performing EKG’s and the removal of arterial sheaths. Radial artery lines will only be inserted at the request of senior resident or attending staff. This procedure will be supervised until full competency of the procedure is demonstrated. In an emergency situation only, the Clinical Assistant may be required to initially manage a cardio-respiratory arrest situation, including endotracheal intubation and insertion of a central venous line until the arrival of other senior personnel. In any and all of the above, the Assistant will not proceed until full training and competence has been established with sign off by the Division Head or his/her designate. This is a teaching hospital with varying degrees of participation from medical students, residents and cardiology fellows. Clinical Assistants must participate in Continuing Professional Development (educational sessions, Grand Rounds, journal clubs, etc.) of at least 50 hours per year. The Clinical Assistant will have the resources explained; they will be a mechanism in place to monitor and report CPD to their Division Head.

This is not an educational program and credits for licensing/certification will not be given.

These responsibilities are meant to be indicative of the job responsibilities and duties and are not inclusive. Performance evaluations will be conducted annually by the Division Head. Failure to meet performance standards will result in termination.

Qualifications

Must meet the requirements to obtain a Clinical Assistant License from The College of Physicians and Surgeon of Nova Scotia (http://cpsns.ns.ca/definedlicense.aspx)
Must have obtained (in writing) Review of Qualifications from The College of Physicians and Surgeon of Nova Scotia prior to application deadline. Please upload this with your application.
CMPA coverage required
ACLS certification required
Good command of written and spoken English
Must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills
Prior experience in the area of Internal Medicine/Cardiology is an asset
Physical demand - Must be able to sit, stand, walk and perform duties as outlined above
Mental and Visual demand – High; must be able to deal with stressful situations
Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred

Salary Information

$44.9779 - $57.2903 hourly
