Job Title: Sous Chef – Daycare Centre
Location: Olivia DiMaio - Lakeshore (Training for new Location in Essex)
Employment Type: Full-Time / Part-Time
Schedule: Monday–Friday, daytime hours
Position Overview
We are seeking a reliable and caring Sous Chef to support meal preparation and kitchen operations at our daycare centre. This role focuses on preparing nutritious, child-friendly meals while maintaining high standards of food safety, cleanliness, and organization. The ideal candidate enjoys working in a child-focused environment and understands the importance of balanced nutrition in early childhood development. Applicant will be training at our Lakeshore Location, and then becoming Chef at our new Essex Location once open.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Head Chef in planning and preparing daily meals and snacks for children
- Ensure all meals meet nutritional guidelines appropriate for young children
- Modify meals to accommodate allergies, dietary restrictions, and cultural preferences
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen environment in compliance with health regulations
- Monitor food inventory and assist with ordering supplies as needed
- Properly store food and label ingredients according to safety standards
- Support kitchen operations including prep work, cooking, and cleanup
- Ensure portion control and minimize food waste
- Occasionally step in to lead kitchen operations in the absence of the Head Chef
- Collaborate with daycare staff to align meal schedules with daily routines
Requirements & Qualifications
- Previous experience as a Sous Chef, Cook, or similar role (experience in childcare or institutional settings is an asset)
- Knowledge of safe food handling and sanitation practices (Food Handler Certification required or willingness to obtain)
- Understanding of children’s nutritional needs
- Ability to prepare meals in large quantities efficiently
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Clear criminal background check (including vulnerable sector screening)
- First Aid/CPR certification is an asset
- Comfortable working in an environment with young children
