Job purpose

The position of Veterinary Technician is in place to provide an efficient, warm, and professional approach to at home veterinary care. This veterinary practice performs veterinary care almost exclusively in the homes of clients. The person in this position should help create a united image of the veterinary health team and be comfortable performing both administrative and veterinary technical support as needed throughout the work day. It is very important to have a strong interest in social interaction as going into people’s homes is a very personal thing and this is a very social position.

Duties and Responsibilities

At Appointments

  • Enter relevant billing and other information into software
  • Assist veterinarian with preparing items for use during appointments
  • Restrain animals as necessary for examination, blood work, vaccinations, etc.
  • Perform billing of client
  • Assist with transportation of animals from people’s homes after euthanasias when they are going for cremation
  • Interact with clients and animals to help keep both pets and their owners at ease
  • Keep inventory, supplies, and schedule organized throughout the day
  • Call clients before their appointments or to update them about any delays
  • Any other tasks within the reasonable scope of the position

On the Road and in Office/At Home

  • Respond to inquiries on the phone, via e-mail, via text, and via Facebook Messages
  • Inquiries can include price inquiries, booking appointments, taking messages, or giving advice on topics that can be advised upon without the veterinarian
  • Perform tasks as per the veterinarian such as: submitting blood work requests, entering notes and mileage, looking up information, ordering inventory, recording newly received inventory, following up with clients on the phone, etc.
  • Assist with social media management including creating Facebook and Instagram posts and helping to manage the blog
  • Ideally will be able to perform urinalyses as well as prepare blood smears, and other slides for review
  • Perform follow-up calls to clients seen in the past to get updates on patients and log these communications
  • Any other tasks within the reasonable scope of the position



  • Preferred candidate will hold a Registered Veterinary Technician or Animal Health Technician Diploma
  • Consideration will be given to candidates holding a Veterinary Assistant Diploma


  • Preferred candidate will have some experience working in a veterinary setting
  • Consideration will be given to those with no experience but a strong desire to learn new things and adapt to a new environment

  • Candidate should excel at and be very comfortable with client communication and interaction
  • Candidate should have excellent ability to restrain fractious animals or determination to master this skill
  • Candidate should be very comfortable in a fast paced environment
  • Candidate should be very organized and good with time management since working out of a vehicle presents unique challenges
  • Candidate should be very comfortable with digital communication methods and technology in general as this is a paperless/paper light practice so there is a lot of technology involved
  • Candidate should be very comfortable composing written communications in the form of articles, e-mails, and social media posts

Working conditions

Regular appointments are seen from Monday – Friday from 9 am – 5 pm (meaning the work day may start as early as 8 am). It may be requested for some administrative work to be done at home, and a computer will be provided when this is requested. After hours/weekend appointments are sometimes scheduled, but there is no specific requirement for this after hours work. The job requires the employee to sit in a vehicle for extended periods of time, and enter into people’s homes. Working with challenging clients and fractious/aggressive animals is possible in this position. Position is 40 hours per week. There is currently one trip to Grand Manan per month, which often requires an overnight stay on Grand Manan. Position is paid hourly – amount commensurate with experience. Continuing Education allowance (amount to be discussed) and Technician Dues are included as benefits.

Physical requirements

Should be comfortable restraining large (up to 150+ lbs) dogs, as well as transporting bodies (with assistance) of similar weight when necessary. Should be comfortable sitting in a vehicle for extended periods of time. Every effort is made to provide employees with a lunch break, but this may be limited to a break in the vehicle if time does not allow a full lunch break. Drivers license is required.
