Pharmacy Assistant
We're looking for a friendly, motivated Pharmacy Assistant to join our team. The right person genuinely enjoys working with people — patients notice the difference between being served and being cared for, and that's the standard we hold ourselves to.
You'll be a strong communicator who is comfortable talking with patients, prescribers, and colleagues, works well independently, and helps keep a warm, welcoming atmosphere in the pharmacy. This role covers preparing medications, filling prescriptions, and interacting with our patients every day.
A minimum of 2 years of experience in a Canadian community pharmacy is required.
Responsibilities
Receiving prescriptions
Accept prescriptions from patients in accordance with provincial legal and regulatory requirements, and assess each one for completeness — name, address, DOB, allergies, third-party information, special requests, prescriber, and generic/brand selection — while prioritizing prescriptions appropriately.
Computer functions
Perform data entry, price checks, patient information entry and updates, refills, report generation, and patient profile checks as directed by the Pharmacist. Accurately interpret and process written prescriptions, including Latin abbreviations, drug name recognition, and dosage calculations.
Filling prescriptions (always under the Pharmacist's supervision)
Select appropriate products and complete the accuracy program, including 7-point, visual, and DIN checks. Count, measure, prepare, label, and organize prescriptions for pharmacist verification; obtain approvals for verbal refills where authorized; use "STOP" forms where applicable; and support all aspects of Cognitive Services.
Inventory control
Assist the Pharmacist in maintaining appropriate stock levels of drugs and supplies. Pull expired medications at least monthly, clear stale prescriptions from the Will Call bin regularly, process returns, and place orders through our preferred wholesaler (Kohl & Frisch) wherever possible. Operate the Telxon gun, check in, price, and shelve pharmacy orders, zone shelves, mark opened bottles, and apply working knowledge of interchangeable drugs and preferred generics.
Housekeeping
Keep the dispensary clean, organized, and well stocked with filling supplies (vials, labels, bags). Maintain a clean and safe work environment as part of a team approach, and keep packaging, dispensing, and office equipment in good working order.
Clerical and administrative
File prescriptions, invoices, reports, correspondence, and memos, and complete assigned administrative tasks such as journals, accounts receivable, and Aged Trial Balance.
OTC support
Assist with OTC ordering, stocking, and cashier duties as assigned by the OTC Manager or Pharmacist.
