About Us:
Amal Youth & Family Centre delivers a wide range of programs for children, youth, families, and adults across Newfoundland and Labrador. Our central facility is a converted school - a large, multi-purpose building with a full gym, multiple classrooms/offices, and shared spaces for program teams and community partners to run meetings, training and events.
Position Overview:
The Maintenance and Janitorial Services Support staff is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and operational efficiency of facilities across Amal’s programs at 7 Ricketts Road. This role requires strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills, along with a proactive, hands-on approach to facility maintenance.
Key Responsibilities:
Core Tasks
-Perform routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, and vacuuming.
-Ensure bathrooms, kitchens, and common areas are sanitized and well-maintained.
-Manage waste disposal and recycling processes.
-Monitor and maintain an inventory of cleaning supplies, placing orders as necessary.
-Ensure the security of the building by locking doors and gates after hours.
-Participate in team meetings to provide feedback on facility conditions and improvement needs.
General Responsibilities
-Develop positive and supportive relationships with facility users and staff.
-Address the physical upkeep needs of the facility.
-Adhere to health and safety standards consistently and rigorously.
-Provide a service that values and respects the differing cultures and ethnic backgrounds of facility users.
-Ensure compliance with all Amal Youth and Family Centre Policies and Procedures.
-Be accessible and available for shifts and give adequate notice for leave.
Health and Safety
-Protect the health and safety of self, co-workers, and others at the workplace.
-Co-operate with employer, co-workers, OHS committee/workplace health and safety designate, and anyone exercising a duty imposed under OHS legislation.
-Report hazardous conditions to the immediate supervisor.
-Properly use all equipment and devices.
-Wear appropriate clothing for safely completing duties, including but not limited to safety boots, eye protection, and safety gloves.
-Demonstrate the ability to promptly and effectively use First Aid/CPR if necessary.
-Identify potential hazards and act to prevent accidents.
Communication
-Demonstrate strong communication skills.
-Receive and seek feedback from others and use this feedback for personal and professional growth, as evidenced by progress in areas that require improvement.
-Contribute to the development and maintenance of a growth culture by engaging in open and reflective communication with co-workers, supervisors, and other professional colleagues.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
-Office-based with frequent walking throughout the facility
-Occasional lifting of items up to 30 pounds
-Must be comfortable using office and maintenance equipment
-Busy, multi-use building with frequent, daily program activities (including for young people), partner events, and rentals requiring adaptability.
-Flexible schedule – occasional evening and weekend support required
-High-visibility role with direct impact on program delivery and partner satisfaction.
The position also requires a clear Certificate of Conduct and Vulnerable Sector Check from the RNC or RCMP.
