Role Summary
The Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the financial health and accountability of the organization. Working closely with the Board of Directors and staff, the Treasurer provides financial oversight, supports budget planning, ensures compliance with financial regulations, and helps maintain the organization's long-term sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Oversight
- Oversee the financial management and financial well-being of the organization.
- Review and monitor financial statements and reports to ensure accuracy and transparency.
- Provide regular financial updates and recommendations to the Board of Directors.
- Serve as an authorized signing officer for organizational checks and financial documents when required.
Budget Management
- Assist in the development and oversight of the annual operating budget.
- Monitor revenues and expenditures to ensure financial sustainability.
- Report on the organization's financial status and budget performance to the board.
- Support financial planning and decision-making processes.
Record Keeping
- Ensure accurate financial records are maintained and properly organized.
- Oversee the documentation and tracking of all financial transactions.
- Support the implementation of sound financial management practices and internal controls.
Compliance & Reporting
- Ensure compliance with all applicable financial regulations, reporting requirements, and organizational policies.
- Support the preparation and submission of financial reports required by funders, regulatory bodies, and government agencies.
- Assist in preparing financial information for audits, annual reports, and the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Qualifications
- Must be functionally bilingual: French & English
- Strong financial literacy and analytical skills.
- Experience in accounting, bookkeeping, finance, budgeting, or a related field is an asset.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy and transparency.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Previous board or nonprofit experience is an asset but not required.
Time Commitment
- 1-2 Board meetings/ month (3-6 hours/ month)
