Job Summary
The Western Cree Tribal Council, Child Youth and Family Enhancement Agency, is comprised of two Nations (Duncan’s First Nation and Horse Lake Nation). The Generalist/Caseworker reports to the Supervisor of the Child Youth and Family Enhancement Agency. This position will perform duties for the two nations to protect children, preserving the family unit and developing the community as a whole to children’s need from screening, initial/extended assessments, investigations, case management duties, court preparation and attendance of the child intervention services from family enhancement agreements with guardian or youth; custody agreement with guardian or youth; temporary guardianship orders, supervision orders, permanent guardianship orders; adoption, drug endangered children’s act; protection against family violence act; PCHAD; on-call/afterhours duties as per rotational schedule. This position will require that you be well-versed in intervention services and will see you gain a thorough understanding of all applicable acts, regulations and policies.
a) CASE WORK:
To children, youth and families in need with the goal to achieve their full potential and to prevent circumstances requiring the protective placement of children;
b) COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT:
Through various means in addition to casework, promote enhancement of the quality of parenting and a better understanding of children’s needs on the part of all members of the community, and;
c) TRAINING:
Developing and maintaining knowledge and skills (i.e.: interviewing) by participating in mandatory training and other various workshops and community awareness seminars.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Social Work;
- Abide/adhere to the Code of Ethics as Alberta College of Social Workers;
- Abide/adhere to the Code of Ethics as per Western Cree Tribal Council Child Youth and Family Enhancement Agency personnel policies;
- Be registered with the Alberta College of Social Workers;
- Will possess facilitation skills in the areas of family dynamics; mediation; crisis intervention; advocacy; suicide awareness/prevention/intervention; alcohol related birth defects;
- Clear Child Information and Criminal Records checks;
- Valid driver’s license; ability to travel;
- Clear driver’s abstract;
- Excellent computer skills;
- Must have completed mandatory delegation training;
- Must be able to work independently with a minimum of guidance/supervision;
- Must have completed Casework Practice Model;
Responsibilities
· Will receive reports of alleged child abuse/neglect, examine the information and consult with the Supervisor to determine where there is a need for initial assessment/investigation;
· Will be responsible for the investigation of alleged child abuse/neglect to determine the nature and degree of risk to the child; when necessary, this position will apprehend the child(ren) deemed at immediate risk as per Child Youth and Family Enhancement Act;
· Will provide case planning and management to meet the child(ren) unmet needs; seek to resolve issues in the best interests of the child; protect the child from harmful situations;
· Establishing specific long and short term goals for planning/prioritizing; concurrent/transitional plans to be completed as per policy and meet the timelines; plans to be developed with the participation of all parties involved;
· Responsible for providing services to meet the diverse needs of the children assigned to your caseload, complete referral and evaluation of services form (i.e.: youth and family support work);
· Will have a well-developed understanding of human behavior and those factors that influence or cause behavior change;
· Will work closely with the Foster Care Support Worker to ensure children are placed in safe, stable and secure placements;
· Responsible for the enhancement of skills and abilities of families in order to assist them in providing safe, stable and nurturing environments for their children;
· Provide teaching, counselling and advocacy in order to preserve and strengthen families within their respective communities and their home environments by assisting families/children in accessing community resources and natural helpers;
· To protect children, preserve the family unit and developing the community as a whole to respond to children’s needs;
· Will have skills such as time management; organizational skills; good verbal/written communication; inter/intrapersonal skills; interviewing; assessing; problem-solving; decision making; conflict resolution/de-escalating; creativity; good documentation and observation skills;
· Court work/preparation/attendance will be required; proper filing of documents at the court house; ensuring legislative requirements and timelines for serving notice are met; acting as Commissioner of Affidavits as required;
· Development/analysis of recommendations and activities with the child youth and family enhancement act;
· Comply/adhere to the child youth and family enhancement polices;
· Understanding and application of a body of theoretical knowledge and a significant amount of content knowledge; focusing and alleviating identified protection concerns;
· Permanency planning skills;
· Vehicle maintenance, oil change
· Visits with children in care as per policy and documentation of such;
· Case conferences every three months with children in care/caregivers;
· Visiting and helping those families regularly to provide guidance and assistance;
· Concurrent plans (all plans); genograms; information consolidation (detailed assessment); and all other pertinent documentation for the child’s file will be up to date as per policy and standards and monitoring;
· Will job shadow with other workers when requested;
· Responsible for all data entry (Child Youth Information Module and Intervention Services Information System);
· Preforms other duties as required such as being intake/on-call as per rotational schedule;
· Be punctual, regular office hours are from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
Work Environment:
WCTC CYFE is a Forward-Thinking Agency covering 2 First Nation Reserves in the area of Child Intervention and Prevention, delivering services to assist families in their respected communities.
This position will be heavily based out of Duncan First Nation Office. Frequent travel to Duncan is necessary.
