The Recreation Manager is a key member of the City's Recreation leadership team, responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of a diverse portfolio that includes working with indoor and outdoor sport user groups, facility and field allocations, sports and fitness programs, arena programming, food services, and community partnerships.
This position leads a team of recreation professionals and is accountable for delivering programs, services, and facilities that are responsive to community needs. Programs and services are operationally effective, financially sustainable, and aligned with the City's strategic priorities. Working in a collaborative environment, the Recreation Manager balances the interests of user groups, residents, staff, and community partners while driving service improvements and enhancing customer experience.
A significant focus of the role is overseeing community sport relationships, facility and field allocation processes, and partnerships that strengthen recreation opportunities throughout Port Coquitlam. As a key liaison with sport organizations, community groups, the school district and the Port Coquitlam Sport Alliance, the Recreation Manager helps advance sport development and tourism opportunities within the community.
The Recreation Manager works closely with the facilities division, the parks department, and events staff to coordinate services and community initiatives. This role requires a leader who is comfortable navigating complexity, managing competing priorities, making sound decisions, and addressing issues with diplomacy, fairness, and professionalism.
The ideal candidate is a confident and experienced recreation leader who combines strategic thinking with strong operational leadership. They are skilled at building relationships, developing staff, solving complex problems, and delivering high-quality recreation services that enhance the quality of life for Port Coquitlam residents.
The successful candidate for this position will have:
- A post-secondary degree in Recreation Management, Sport Administration, Public Administration or a related field.
- A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible leadership experience in municipal recreation operations, including staff supervision, budget administration, service delivery, facility operations, community partnership development and operational decision-making, preferably within a unionized environment.
- Experience supporting arena operations, sport services, recreation facilities and community user.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex user group relationships and navigating competing interests while achieving positive outcomes.
- Proven ability to lead, coach and develop professional staff while fostering a culture of accountability, engagement and continuous improvement.
- Experience developing and implementing operational plans, policies and service improvements that enhance organizational effectiveness and customer experience.
- Strong business acumen, including experience with budgeting, resource allocation, performance measurement and risk management.
- Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive issues and make sound decisions in politically and publicly visible environments.
