The successful candidate for this temporary 36 months position will be responsible for the maintenance of the City’s Solid Waste Resources facilities as well as the associated infrastructure. As the leader of the maintenance team, the Supervisor, Maintenance will plan, schedule, organize, and support a work team comprised of skilled personnel, engaged in the maintenance of the materials recovery facility, transfer station, scale houses, municipal household and special waste, public drop off (2), underground infrastructure, closed landfill site and administration building. Provide visible and positive leadership to staff consistent with the commitments of the City’s Leadership Charter, developing and nurturing a work environment that is inclusive, respectful and motivating for staff.
Responsible for the development, coordination, and scheduling of work plans.
Works closely with peers across the division (i.e. the supervisor of process operations and supervisor of site operations) to ensure continuity and execution of work plans
Assess, identify and implement corrective actions to improve processes, reduce maintenance costs and build redundancy in the various systems, taking into consideration both short and long terms goals that support a growing community.
Monitors assigned work activities to ensure compliance with all applicable Federal, Provincial Acts and regulations, City’s by-laws, policies and procedures.
Responsible to ensure there is a documented preventative maintenance program in place for all equipment.
Provides follow up on team objectives and goals through regular team meetings, onsite inspections and analysis of key performance reports.
Plan, recommend and initiate the purchase of materials, equipment, supplies and services consistent with prescribed purchasing policies and procedures to maintain uninterrupted operation of all aspects of solid waste resources.
Responsible for ensuring that the SCADA program and related PLC upgrades are planned and executed.
Research, develop and prepare tender specifications for equipment replacements and upgrades, obtain quotations and oversee the work of contractors.
Responsible for health and safety and attendance management including daily timekeeping and vacation planning.
Assist in the preparation of operating and capital budgets and responsible for the administration and control of related budgetary expenditure.
Participates in the solid waste resources management on call rotation.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Considerable experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through successful completion of a college level apprenticeship program in a mechanical, electrical or instrumentation or post-secondary education in Mechanical Engineering Technology or related field and considerable experience in inventory management, maintenance, preventative maintenance, in a production and/or operational environment. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Experience supervising staff or leading work teams, preferably in a unionized environment.
Must possess a valid Class G driver’s licence with a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm their licence is held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets the requirements.
Possess a valid trade certificate for either a licensed maintenance mechanic (433A) or Electrician (442A), usually obtained through the completion of the appropriate schooling and apprenticeship program.
Previous experience in a manufacturing or process environment.
Excellent problem solving techniques and the application of good judgment consistent with industry “best practices”.
Strong motivational and team building skills.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and timelines.
Knowledge of all applicable provincial and federal legislation and regulation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable legislation and specifications.
Excellent communication skills, with ability to communicate effectively with staff, contractors and the general public.
Advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
Experience utilizing a variety of computer software programs such as CMMS / WMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems / Work Management Systems).
Knowledge of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system (SCADA).
Knowledge in Programmable Logic Controls.
$41.55 – $51.94 per hour
