AltaSteel is seeking a Process Engineer to join our Steelmaking team and play a critical role in optimizing production processes, improving operational performance, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
This is an exciting opportunity to apply your technical expertise in a dynamic steel manufacturing environment while collaborating with Operations, Maintenance, Quality Assurance, and Engineering teams to drive safe, reliable, and cost-effective production.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor and analyze Steelmaking process performance and key operating metrics to identify trends and improvement opportunities.

Participate in daily operational reviews and provide technical recommendations to improve performance.
Lead root cause investigations related to process deviations, equipment failures, quality concerns, safety incidents, and production interruptions.
Develop and implement process improvement initiatives that support productivity, quality, throughput, yield, and cost reduction objectives.
Identify operational bottlenecks and implement solutions to improve efficiency and overall plant performance.
Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Quality Assurance, and Engineering teams to troubleshoot process and equipment-related issues.
Manage projects from concept development through implementation and commissioning.
Support new product development initiatives, product trials, and process enhancement opportunities.
Analyze operational data using statistical and analytical tools to support data-driven decision-making.
Develop and maintain operating procedures, technical documentation, and process standards.
Support asset utilization, equipment reliability, and plant availability initiatives.
Participate in outage planning, operational readiness reviews, and commissioning activities.
Stay informed of emerging technologies and industry best practices applicable to Steelmaking operations.
Promote a strong safety culture and actively participate in safety initiatives and incident investigations.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Degree in Materials or Metallurgical Engineering.
- Registered with APEGA as an EIT or P.Eng or P.L. (Eng.).
- 7-10years’ experience working in a heavy industrial environment, ideally with experience in steel melting and casting.
- Knowledge of steelmaking refractory systems is be considered an asset.
- Proven track record in problem solving.
- Ability to communicate and influence with all levels of the organization.
- Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team.
- Ability to manage a number of projects and priorities to a timeline and budget, while realizing project benefits.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated responsible attitude towards safety.
- Demonstrated leadership and problem solving skills.
Job Details:
- Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 4:30pm, with the occasional need to work evenings or weekends due to operational need.
