The Unit Clerk position provides clerk support to nursing and clinical staff contributing to the overall functioning of the unit(s). This includes interacting with patients, their families, visitors and volunteers.
- Greet and assist patients and visitors as required.
- Use computer to assist in data collection activities
- Act as a key communicator with clients, families, physicians, clinicians and other related departments and services.
- Distribute mail, photocopy and answer telephone.
- Develop and maintain manual and/or computerized systems for tracking information.
- Format letters, memos and other nursing-unit related correspondence, draft and send e-mails.
- Schedule appointments and assessments for patients (including equipment, space availability and transportation as required).
- Ensure nursing unit(s) is adequately stocked with supplies/resources and track utilization of same.
- Maintain patients’ clinical records in accordance with WPHC policy.
- Be aware of conditions and measures that may affect the safety of patients, residents, students, employees, volunteers, physicians and visitors including:
- Compliance with the safety standards of the hospital and applicable legislation
- Identification and prevention of safety issues and problems
- Taking corrective action, where possible
- Attendance at safety meetings/training/updates in accordance with the Centre’s standards
- Ability to work in a manner that exemplifies the core values of West Park: Excellence, Respect, Trust, Collaboration and Accountability
- Evidence of good performance history and attendance record
Key Qualifications:
- High school diploma
- Completion of a medical terminology course
- Certificate in medical transcription
- Good computer skills
- Working experience transcribing and/or understanding/utilizing medical terminology
- Good communication skills (written & verbal)
- Ability to collaborate within a team setting; good interpersonal skills; resolution-oriented
- Good abilities to manage priorities while multi-tasking
- Good attention-to-detail skills
- Ability to maintain effectiveness when experiencing change in work tasks or the work environment; adjust effectively to work within new processes, requirements, etc.
- Evidence of satisfactory attendance and punctuality
- Previous office experience in a hospital/clinical setting preferred
- Knowledge of Patient 1 considered an asset
