Summary
Permanent Position:
We are seeking an energetic individual to join our team as an Assistant Cook at our Sir Arthur Currie and Northwest Child Care Centre locations. This individual will go between the two locations (just down the street from each other) to provide support as required to each of the Cook's at their location.
Hours: 6hrs per day/30hrs/week (Child Care hours of operation are 7:15 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.)
Schedule: The six-hour-per-day schedule within the hours of operations, Monday through Friday, is flexible, and the majority of times will be a split shift, and determined based on the operational needs of the centres. Every effort will be made to maintain a consistent rotating schedule between the two centres; however, consistency cannot be guaranteed. Schedule assignments may be adjusted as required to meet operational demands and may change at any time, with or without notice.
Responsibilities
The Assistant Cook supports kitchen operations at the Northwest Childcare Centre and the Sir Arthur Currie Childcare Centre.
Kitchen Responsibilities:
According to Canada’s Food Guide, the Child Care and Early Years Act and the Ministry of Health guidelines:
- Supports the Cook in the preparation and serving of nutritional, well-balanced meals and snacks for the children in a timely manner.
- Supports the Cook in the cleaning and sanitizing of daily dishes.
- Has knowledge of groups and individual needs of all children, e.g. allergies, restrictions, substitutes.
- Has knowledge of the ordering of sufficient food and supplies
- Supports the Cook in the maintenance of the kitchen for effective use and in good condition.
- Ensures proper storage of food and supplies.
- Follows all guidance and directions provided by the Cook
- May occasionally be required to cover the Cook responsibilities during their absences
Health and Safety Responsibilities:
According to the Ministry of Health guidelines and the Health and Safety Policy
- Handles and prepares food in a sanitary manner.
- Follows all sanitary and cleaning procedures.
- Shows awareness of health and safety hazards in the kitchen.
- Routinely monitors for conditions which may affect the health and safety of children and adults in the facility.
Responsibilities to the Organization:
- Communicates appropriately with and maintains a positive, professional attitude when interacting with children, staff, parents and visitors.
- Shows an active interest in growing and learning as an Assistant Cook through ongoing professional development.
- Is flexible as required for smooth operations.
Education, skills, special training, certificates and experience required to perform successfully the duties of the position successfully:
- Minimum education- High School graduate
- Must possess a Food Handlers’ Certificate.
- Relevant experience in a commercial kitchen or other institution preferred.
- Knowledge of the Canada Food Guide and the Ministry of Health regulations
- First Aid and Infant/Child CPR, Criminal Reference Check (for new employees dated within 6 months before hire), WHMIS.
