Unit Summary

Hamilton Health Sciences is the Ministry designated Lead Trauma Hospital for Hamilton, Niagara, Haldimand-Norfolk, Brant, Waterloo, Wellington and Halton. As one of the highest volume trauma centres in the province, the Trauma Program admits over 900 trauma patients each year to the trauma service and provides integrated clinical, research, prevention and educational services along the entire trauma continuum by a multidisciplinary team. Trauma Registry data is the key source for incremental volume funding provided by the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care, for both the adult and pediatric trauma populations.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Trauma Program Coordinator, the Trauma Data Analyst takes guidance and works cooperatively as part of the trauma registry data team. Key accountabilities for the Trauma Data Analyst include: collection, entry, verification, analysis, reporting and maintenance of the data for the Trauma Registry and Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP); collection of all Comprehensive Data Set elements required as a Lead Trauma Hospital for seriously injured adult and pediatric patients; reporting data to the Ontario Trauma Registry; development of reports; generating statistics for program, corporate, LHIN and regional reports; knowledge of general statistics; assist with data needs for research; development of procedures and standardized forms to assist in data collection; ongoing collaboration and communication with healthcare professionals, provincial counterparts and other stakeholders supporting or working with provincial and regional trauma program.

1. Post Secondary education in health care field, graduate of Health Records Admin program preferred.
2. Minimum 3 years experience in data abstraction in health records or research environment.
3. Experience with medical records, data abstraction, chart audit or coding in a health records or research environment.
4. Strong data entry and data management skills with the ability to document data processes.
5. Working knowledge of electronic health record systems such as Sovera and Meditech.
6. Strong working knowledge of Excel and other computer applications and software packages.
7. Demonstrate excellent organizational, interpersonal, critical thinking, communication and time management skills.
8. Demonstrate ability for detailed quantitative and qualitative work.
9. Ability to make independent judgment in abstracting medical data and the knowledge when to seek input.
10. Ability to adapt to changes in timelines and priorities, and project assignments as required.
11. Demonstrated ability to write queries and produce accurate reports.
12. Strong working knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology an asset.
13. Clinical experience in Trauma and/or Emergency medicine preferred.
14. Ability to develop presentations and present information to registry stakeholders, an asset.
15. Experience with the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) and Injury Severity Scoring (ISS 2005) an asset.
16. Member Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) an asset.
17. Experience with research proposals and REB submissions an asset.
