Your role

Do you have a passion for breaking news? Do you love telling stories for both digital and broadcast? Do you excel at pitching original stories and seeing them through to completion?

CBC Ottawa is looking for a Reporter/Editor to be part of our small but mighty weekend news team, filing for all of our platforms. You are a smart journalist who is driven to uncover news, chase fast breaking stories and connect with a range of people in our city.

You have a track record of being first on big news and producing original journalism.

You have a strong social media following, and use those platforms to find stories and sources, and to share content with our audiences. You are an exceptional writer, with a demonstrated ability to write in a clear, concise manner. You understand the needs of a digital audience.

Your on-air performance is strong. The successful candidate is an excellent journalist who thrives in the fast- paced, high-pressure world of breaking news. The ability to go live and “off script” at a moment’s notice is highly valued.

Key Tasks:
Monitors competition, social media streams and other sources for developing stories, and identifies breaking news.
Conducts interviews that may be used for news clips, digital stories or on current affairs programs.
Develops and maintains contacts with a variety of sources.
Works closely with Radio-Canada to share stories, tape, and sources.
Conducts analysis of facts and information gathered and draws conclusions or raises issues requiring further investigation.
Prepares, writes and delivers scripts, stories and packaged radio items.
Contributes tape/content and contacts to programs on current affairs radio and television.
Maintains connections with a variety of community members including Indigenous and diverse leaders in the city.
Pitches original journalism daily.

As required, accomplishes the following tasks:
Edits radio and digital material written by others.
Presents information on-air in recorded or live reports for television and radio.
Takes photos, edits video as needed.
Follows particular areas of current public interest or concern.
Performs production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the newsroom, program unit or station.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:
University degree or equivalent with a minimum of three years of recent experience.
Experience in determining potential legal and journalistic issues and ability to act on them.
Ability to speak and read French is a strong asset.
An open mind, a flexible attitude and focused desire to meet the needs of the Ottawa audience.
Strong news sense.
Strong technical and production skills and an aptitude for computer editing and mixing.
Knowledge and understanding of CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices
A strong working knowledge of Ottawa-Gatineau, its diverse communities and the issues important to the region.
Critical thinking and analytical abilities.
Aptitude for developing excellent writing, reporting, technical and on-air presentation skills, and demonstrated knowledge of working on multiple platforms including social, digital and broadcast.
Proven ability to work independently and to show initiative.
Demonstrated ability to provide live on-air reports, debriefs, and analysis of complex events.
Able to work well under pressure and handle multiple priorities simultaneously, working to tight deadlines.
The ability to work well in a cross-cultural environment.
Solid people skills.
A sense of humour.
You are known to be a true team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills, but are also able to think independently and take initiative.
You understand the world of news and have an ability to work various shifts including early mornings, evenings and weekends.
