Role Overview:
As a Senior Aquarist you will be responsible for executing daily tasks relating to fish / shrimp and snail husbandry, aquarium / store maintenance, customer service, and perform other duties as they pertain to working in an aquatic pet store to ensure the best care for our aquatic animals and valued customers.
Key Responsibilities
Customer service
- Creating a welcoming environment for customers & providing the highest standards of service throughout their visit.
- Providing education and advice to clients on topics including but not limited to livestock care, aquarium theory, and the use of aquarium products.
- Supporting brand collaborations by highlighting products of interest and encouraging sales.
- Building and maintaining relationships with customers to ensure growth within our business and the hobby as a whole.
Aquarium care & maintenance
- Performing daily aquarium maintenance including but not limited to water changes, aquarium cleaning, filter maintenance, plant care, dosing of chemicals, etc.
- Performing duties relating to livestock husbandry including but not limited to fish feedings, observation & reporting, administering medications, etc.
- Implementing biosecurity protocols to support fish health.
- Aiding in the receiving of livestock, setting up acclimation systems, assessing new arrivals, and planning treatment protocols.
- Committing to continuous education on topics relating to livestock care, aquarium products, and aquarium theory.
General Store duties
- Receiving purchase orders for dry goods & plants, stocking & facing shelves to maintain an attractive storefront.
- Accurately performing sales transactions for cash, debit, and credit card at point-of-sale registers.
- Organizing & cleaning store environment to maintain tidiness, attractiveness, and hygiene of space.
- Answering phones and performing other duties as required.
- Acting as a team member by showing consideration, cooperation, tolerance, reliability and ability to accept and respond to constructive feedback.
Qualifications
Skills and Experience
- Knowledge of freshwater Aquaria:
- Possess an advanced knowledge of keeping tropical nano-fish and aquascaped tanks
- At least two years' experience keeping tropical fresh
- Prior experience working in an aquarium store setting would be a
- Customer Service Skills
- Possess an outgoing and friendly personality with outstanding customer service skills
- Ability to effectively and efficiently educate customers on technical concepts regarding aquarium care and theory
- Prior experience working in a customer service role would be an asset
- Possess a very strong attention to detail and ability to foresee and prevent potential problems before they arise
- Possess superior organizational and multi-tasking skills to ensure all tasks are completed on time in a busy retail environment
- High School Graduate or higher
Working Conditions
- Ability to lift up to 30lbs, & ability to be mobile - reach, bend, stoop, climb ladders, etc.
- Requires standing for long periods of time
- Exposure to slippery conditions and uneven surfaces.
- Be comfortable working in a store where dogs, cats, and exotic animals may visit with customers
- Ability to work 10-hour shifts, including evenings & weekends.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary Range - $28 - $32 per hour
