Technician III - Genetics

As an integral member of the Genetics laboratory the Laboratory Technician III will perform a variety of support functions under direct supervision including; receiving, sorting, and processing specimens following established procedures and guidelines; preparing, handling and dispensing specimens/reagents, as required; accessioning cases; archiving specimens; assisting in telephone calls and customer service; assisting in maintenance of equipment and benches; assisting in quality improvement programs, observing and understanding hospital and departmental policies and procedures; adhering to hospital and departmental mission and value statements while maintaining patient confidentiality; performing cross-functional duties, as assigned, or requested; performing other duties related to and consistent with job classification, as required. Will be required to work at all sites as assigned.

  • Completion of Grade XII, or recognized equivalent required
  • Graduation from a certified post-secondary Laboratory Technician or Laboratory Assistant certificate program, or recognized equivalent required
  • Certification from OSMT
  • Recent work experience in genetics or pathology preferred
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of procedures pertaining to genetics preferred
  • Demonstrated problem recognition and problem solving skills
  • Effective organizational, time management, and prioritization skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be computer literate in Windows based applications
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast paced environment
  • Understanding of appropriate behaviour required to work successfully in a diverse work group
