Job Overview
Young Industries Group is seeking a dedicated Construction Safety Officer to support the day-to-day execution of our Health, Safety and Environmental program across our family of companies.
This role will focus primarily on heavy civil and commercial/industrial construction operations, with additional support to other company settings, including retail operations, as required.
The successful candidate will serve as a key safety resource in both the office and the field. This position will help ensure safety requirements are clearly communicated, properly documented, consistently followed, and practically applied across job sites, work locations, supervisors, employees, contractors, and related company operations.
The Construction Safety Officer will work within an established safety program while also bringing forward practical ideas, field-level insight, and continuous improvement recommendations. The role reports to the Chief Operating Officer, who provides executive oversight of the safety program.
Key Responsibilities
The Construction Safety Officer will be responsible for:
- Supporting the day-to-day execution of the company’s Health, Safety and Environmental program.
- Promoting a strong, practical safety culture across job sites, work locations, departments, and company operations.
- Using SiteDocs to manage, monitor, and support safety documentation, inspections, orientations, forms, records, and compliance requirements.
- Supporting heavy civil and commercial/industrial construction operations, including job sites involving equipment, excavation, roadwork, aggregates, site development, shops, yards, laydown areas, and related field work.
- Completing, reviewing, and supporting hazard management documentation.
- Helping ensure appropriate controls are identified, communicated, documented, and followed.
- Conducting and documenting toolbox talks, toolbox chats, and safety meetings.
- Supporting retail operations with toolbox talks, safety documentation, training, and related safety requirements as needed.
- Conducting site inspections with supervisors and supporting corrective action follow-up.
- Assisting with incident, accident, near-miss, hazard, property damage, and environmental reporting.
- Supporting incident and accident investigations, including documentation, corrective actions, and follow-up.
- Conducting company safety orientations for new employees, returning employees, contractors, subcontractors, and visitors as required.
- Supporting safety education and training so workers understand applicable Safe Work Practices and Safe Job Procedures.
- Maintaining critical safety records, logs, inspection reports, orientation records, training records, and related documentation.
- Supporting COR-certified operations, including ongoing compliance, audit readiness, annual audit submissions, and corrective action plans.
- Supporting contractor and subcontractor safety documentation, orientations, and compliance requirements.
- Supporting emergency preparedness, response planning, and related documentation.
- Bringing forward practical recommendations to improve safety communication, training, documentation, and field-level execution.
- Staying current with applicable occupational health and safety legislation, standards, COR requirements, and company procedures.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
- Formal safety training such as Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Safety Officer, National Construction Safety Officer, National Health and Safety Administrator, or a related safety discipline.
- Practical experience in construction, heavy civil, commercial/industrial, industrial services, equipment-based operations, or similar work environments.
- Working knowledge of construction hazards, safety controls, inspections, incident reporting, safety documentation, and worker training.
- Familiarity with Newfoundland and Labrador occupational health and safety requirements.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work professionally with workers, supervisors, managers, contractors, and external parties.
- Strong documentation, recordkeeping, computer, and follow-up skills.
- Ability to work in both office and field environments.
- A valid driver’s licence.
- Ability to travel to job sites and company work locations as required.
Assets
The following would be considered assets:
- Experience with SiteDocs or another online safety management platform.
- COR experience, including audit preparation, audit support, or annual submission support.
- Experience in heavy civil construction, roadwork, excavation, aggregates, site development, commercial construction, industrial construction, or construction-related operations.
- Experience supporting safety in retail, warehouse, shop, fleet, yard, or multi-location business environments.
- Experience conducting toolbox talks, orientations, inspections, and incident investigations.
- Standard First Aid.

We are looking for someone who is organized, confident, practical, and comfortable working directly with teams in the field, office, and other operational settings.
The right person will understand that safety is not just paperwork. It is about helping people work properly, identifying risks before they become incidents, and supporting supervisors and workers with clear expectations.
This position requires someone who can balance compliance with common sense, maintain accurate records, and help ensure safety requirements are consistently applied across multiple job sites, work locations, and company operations.
Working Conditions
This position will involve a combination of office and field work.
Working conditions may include:
- Active heavy civil and commercial/industrial construction sites.
- Shops, yards, garages, warehouses, laydown areas, retail operations, and office settings.
- Outdoor work in changing Newfoundland and Labrador weather conditions.
- Travel to job sites and company work locations in Springdale, Central Newfoundland, and other areas as required.
- Exposure to heavy equipment, vehicle traffic, noise, dust, uneven ground, weather, tools, machinery, materials, and other job site hazards.
- Requirement to wear appropriate PPE.
- Occasional work outside regular office hours depending on operational needs, incidents, inspections, training, audits, or project requirements.
