Job Description:
Job Summary:
The Indigenous Student Advisor is responsible for providing culturally appropriate guidance and support to the Indigenous students at CityU Canada. The Advisor is a critical resource and an advocate, assisting students in navigating the academic, social, and cultural aspects of university life. The Advisor collaborates with university departments and external Indigenous organizations to create a supportive and inclusive environment for Indigenous students to thrive academically and personally.
This role aims to enhance Indigenous students' educational and personal success by providing specialized advising and advocacy that respects and incorporates Indigenous cultures, traditions, and perspectives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Academic Support
- Provide one-on-one academic advising to Indigenous students.

Assist students with navigating university systems, accessing campus resources, and understanding academic policies and procedures.

Develop personalized plans to support students' academic success and well-being.
2. Personal Support
- Provide one-on-one support and referrals for Indigenous students facing personal challenges, including mental health, housing, and financial issues.

Connect Indigenous students with cultural resources, Elders, and community leaders for support and mentorship.

Assist students with accessing counseling services, health resources, and other support networks.
3. Advocacy and Outreach
- Advocate for the needs, rights, and well-being of Indigenous students within the university community.

Assist in recruiting Indigenous students by participating in outreach activities and events.
4. Professional Development and Knowledge Enhancement
- Stay informed of best practices in Indigenous education and student support.

Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance culturally responsive advising and advocacy skills.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:

- A diploma, degree, or associated experience in Education, Social Work, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.

Experience working with Indigenous communities and knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and issues.

Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

Sensitivity to and respect for cultural diversity and individual differences.

Salary information:
CAD $45,000 - $50,000/year DOE
