We are currently looking for experienced Heavy Equipment Operators who understand construction site operations and can work effectively as part of a professional field team.
The Heavy Equipment Operator reports to the Site Foreman and Superintendent and plays a key role in keeping daily site operations running safely and efficiently. This position is responsible for the safe set up, operation, and basic maintenance of heavy equipment on active excavation and civil construction sites, while ensuring all work complies with company Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. Duties include operating one or several types of equipment to excavate, load, move, grade, and compact materials in coordination with ground crews.
Equipment You May Operate
Depending on project requirements, operators may work with:
- Excavators
- Loaders
- Dozers
- Compaction equipment
- Other earthmoving machinery used for civil construction and site development
Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)
- Strictly adheres to all company Health, Safety, and Environmental standards and Nova Scotia Occupational Health & Safety regulations.
- Provides a safe environment for all employees, subcontractors, and site visitors.
- Operates controls, levers, and pedals to excavate, lift, move, grade, or load materials with precision.
- Takes action to avoid potential hazards or obstructions such as other equipment, workers, underground utilities, or moving objects.
- Maintains constant awareness of surrounding crews, trenches, traffic, and changing site conditions.
- Positions and moves loads in response to hand, radio, or audio signals from crew members.
- Coordinates machine actions with other site activities and follows direction from the Foreman.
- Provides backup or assistance throughout the site as needed or assigned.
Equipment & Maintenance
- Conducts daily equipment inspections before operation.
- Performs basic equipment care including cleaning, lubrication, and minor servicing.
- Reports all equipment deficiencies or malfunctions requiring maintenance or repair to the proper supervisor.
- Assists mechanics with basic servicing and general clean up around equipment and loading zones as needed.
Interpersonal Contacts
Direct contact with the Site Foreman, Superintendent, ground crews, and other operators. Face-to-face and radio communication is required daily.
Job Conditions
This position is regularly exposed to all weather conditions. Physical hazards such as noise, dust, fumes, uneven ground, and moving equipment are present throughout active construction sites. Safety boots, hearing protection, hi-visibility clothing, hard hat, and additional personal protective equipment as needed must be worn to reduce the risks associated with these hazards.
Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions
Ability to: sit frequently while operating equipment; stand and walk frequently on uneven ground throughout the site; lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally; push and pull occasionally when moving materials; crouch, bend, and stoop consistently to access materials or equipment; reach at arm's length and overhead frequently; climb occasionally when entering and exiting equipment; twist and turn at the neck and trunk continually; manual dexterity required to handle, grasp, and manipulate controls and tools constantly; arm-hand steadiness required for precision work; communicate by speech and hearing continually. Visual acuity needed for close detail and depth perception. Mental focus needed to work independently while demonstrating attention to detail and continuous site awareness.
What We Are Looking For
- Minimum 3 years experience operating heavy construction equipment.
- Experience working in excavation, site development, or civil construction.
- Strong understanding of job site safety and situational awareness.
- Mechanical aptitude and the ability to perform basic equipment inspections.
- Ability to work effectively with field crews and follow direction from site leadership.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and professionalism.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining communication with supervisors.
