This competition is open to all applicants, however internal candidates and applicants who were former employees of the University of Alberta in the past 18 months will be given priority consideration before external candidates.
This is a new position in the Pang Laboratory. The Research Assistant will be responsible for maintaining the research lab in support of research projects of testing SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater.
This position will have an end date of March 31, 2022 with the possibility of extension.
Process wastewater samples for SARS-CoV-2 concentration
Perform nucleic acid extraction, RT-qPCR to detect SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater
Prepare the controls and standards for the virus concentration and qPCR
Other Related Lab Duties – (10%).
Prepare buffers and media
Equipment maintenance, including fridge/freezer temperature monitoring, cell culture
incubator, biosafety cabinet etc.;
Prepare and autoclave lab supplies
Orientating new staff and students to the lab; answering basic lab related questions as required
Enter results into the database (Excel sheet), Reporting the qPCR results to data analyst
Utilizes computer programs, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint etc.
Minimum formal education of a NAIT Diploma in Health & Life Science is required; Postsecondary education of a Bachelor’s degree or MSc degree in Molecular and Biology or Medical
Laboratory Science program is preferred
Minimum one year in a research laboratory environment
Experience working with environmental virology projects and molecular techniques
Excellent communication skills and time management skills
Experience in WHIMS, lab safety procedures and quality control is desirable
