Overview
Initially, the successful candidate will receive training in scheduling, staffing, quality, safety, equipment reliability, and the continuous improvement of plant operations.
The Assistant Plant Manager is a hands-on leadership role. The successful candidate will learn the various operations performed in our plant, including Anodizing, Heat Treating, Casting Impregnation, Conversion Coatings, and Engineered Coatings. Working directly alongside the Plant Manager, the successful candidate will spend the first several years learning every aspect of the company's operations through hands-on experience. The candidate must be able and willing to fill in for departmental process leaders when they are absent.
This position is expected to lead by example, work on the shop floor, supervise production teams, solve day-to-day operational issues, and continuously improve safety, quality, delivery, and productivity.
Key Responsibilities
1. Production & Delivery
- Provide coverage when team leaders are absent.
- Ensure daily production targets are met or exceeded.
- Improve on-time delivery performance.
- Reduce production downtime.
- Use a forklift to move materials and quench loads.
2. Quality Performance
- Ensure adherence to all quality standards and customer requirements.
- Lead root-cause analyses and corrective actions for defects.
3. Operational Efficiency & Cost Control
- Identify and implement process improvements.
- Support cost-reduction initiatives involving labour, materials, and overhead.
4. Maintenance & Equipment Reliability
- Support preventive and predictive maintenance systems.
- Improve uptime and reduce reactive maintenance.
5. Leadership & People Development
- Lead, coach, and develop supervisors and production employees.
- Build a strong, accountable, and engaged workforce.
6. Safety Leadership
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture.
Ensure compliance with all safety policies and regulations.
Qualifications
- Experience in wet processing, metal finishing, anodizing, electroplating, chemical processing, or a similar manufacturing environment is strongly preferred.
- Forklift operating experience is required. The successful candidate must hold valid operator certification.
- Manufacturing leadership experience (supervisory experience preferred).
- Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to work in a hands-on production environment.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making ability.
- Experience with lean manufacturing and continuous improvement is an asset.
- Knowledge of ISO quality systems and production scheduling is preferred.
- Post-secondary education in chemistry, engineering, manufacturing, or a related field is preferred, or equivalent manufacturing experience.
