Overview
We are currently seeking an experienced and safety-driven Hydrovac Operator to support our underground utility and fiber optic construction projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe excavation of soil using high-pressure water and vacuum systems to expose underground utilities.
This role is critical to ensuring safe digging practices and preventing damage to existing infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Operate hydrovac truck to safely expose underground utilities (daylighting)
- Perform potholing, trenching, and slot trenching in support of OSP construction
- Locate and verify existing underground utilities in accordance with locates
- Maintain safe operation around live utilities (gas, hydro, telecom, water)
- Conduct daily vehicle and equipment inspections and complete required logs
- Ensure proper setup of safety controls including traffic control and site protection
- Communicate effectively with foremen, locators, and crew members
- Maintain cleanliness and basic maintenance of hydrovac unit
- Follow all company health & safety policies and Ontario OHSA regulations
Skills
- Proven experience operating heavy equipment such as excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, backhoes, or similar machinery
- Mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot basic issues with hydrovac trucks and related equipment
- Familiarity with construction sites, safety standards, and utility locating procedures
- Ability to operate additional machinery including dozers, loaders, graders, backhoes, excavators, and paving equipment is highly desirable
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) or equivalent for operating large vehicles safely on public roads
- Knowledge of horizontal drilling techniques is a plus but not required
- Strong understanding of heavy equipment brands such as Caterpillar or similar manufacturers
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum 2+ years experience operating a hydrovac truck
- Valid AZ or DZ driver’s license (clean abstract required)
- Strong understanding of underground utility locates and safe excavation practices
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding outdoor environment
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Willingness to work early mornings, overtime, and occasional weekends
Working Conditions
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions
- Early start times (7:00 AM)
- Physically demanding role involving lifting, bending, and extended standing
Lunia members preferred, must be willing to join the union.
Pay: $30.00 per hour
