The Opportunity:
The School of Image Arts (http://www.imagearts.ryerson.ca/) in the Faculty of Communication & Design (FCAD) at Ryerson University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in film and digital media screenwriting and production. The appointment, effective July 1, 2019, is subject to final budgetary approval.

The School of Image Arts is recognized as a national and international centre for creative innovation in the study, production, exhibition and research of film, photography and digital arts. The School’s unique and professionally-focused undergraduate curriculum supports programs in Photography Studies and Film Studies. Its innovative graduate programs include the MFA in Documentary Media, the MA in Film + Photographic Preservation and Collections Management and an interdisciplinary program in Dramatic Writing (MFA) currently in development.

The School’s programs are designed to lead to careers in film, photography, communications, education and in the cultural industries. Each year our students and recent graduates have films screened in the leading film festivals in Canada, the U.S. and worldwide. The School’s full-time faculty is made up of dedicated individuals with established professional, research, and teaching experience in their respective areas of expertise. Toronto is the hub of the film production industry in Canada, and our students have access to experiential learning opportunities with local production companies and broadcasters.

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, research and service duties and will teach a variety of writing and production courses in the undergraduate Film Studies program. It is also anticipated that the candidate will teach and supervise students in the Dramatic Writing (MFA) program.

We are seeking a candidate with significant professional expertise in writing for film and digital productions. Candidates will be expected to teach a range of core screenwriting and production courses, as well as electives related to writing for a variety of digital and new media platforms, such as narrative series, web series, interactive programming and/or VR/AR.

Candidates will be expected to participate in the university’s shared governance model (committee participation, departmental planning and programming), develop co-curricular activities, and remain connected to a network of professionals within the North American media industries that will benefit students intending to enter the field.

The successful candidate will hold at least a terminal Master’s degree (M.F.A. or the equivalent; Ph.D. will be considered an asset) along with a substantial professional record of creative activity in film and/or digital media production. Evidence of excellence in teaching at a post-secondary institution is a requirement. The School of Image Arts is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to experiential learning. Curriculum development experience will be considered an asset.

The successful candidate is expected to provide evidence of, or the potential for, high-quality teaching, the potential for a strong creative and/or research profile (e.g. the ability to maintain an independent, externally funded research and/or creative program). The successful candidate must have experience in creative script development in a range of media platforms, and a track record of critically acclaimed and successfully produced creative work.
