The YMCA of Greater Saint John responds to critical social needs in the community and works to provide solutions. By nurturing the potential of children, youth and adults, the YMCA connects people to life-building opportunities, as well as to each other and enhances their quality of life. The YMCA of Greater Saint John offers a diverse set of programs at 12 locations in the city and surrounding municipalities. There are 250 employees and 1,000 volunteers.

Newcomer Connections is a key pillar within the YMCA family. Established in 1993, Y Newcomer Connections is a leading immigrant settlement centre focused on creating connections that will transform our community into a lasting, healthy home for immigrants from around the world, and from all walks of life. Under the YMCA’s current Strategic Plan, Newcomer Connections aims to expand and share its expertise working with diverse groups more widely across the Association and in the community at large.


The Social Inclusion Officer works with YMCA staff and key community stakeholders to foster a climate in which diversity is valued and inclusion is prioritized, both within the YMCA and across the Greater Saint John region. Key portfolios include: the development and oversight of the YMCA’s cultural competency programs, and the implementation of the YMCA’s Diversity and Inclusion Strategy. Reporting to the VP of Newcomer and Community Connections, this position will help create a more welcoming community and will enhance the long-term culture and impact of the YMCA.


1. Design, develop and deliver dynamic, high-quality Cultural Competency Training across various sectors in the greater Saint John community and across New Brunswick;

2. Design, develop and deliver department-specific training for YMCA staff so teams may effectively serve diverse client groups;

3. Work closely with the Client Intake Liaison to support employers bringing staff and families to New Brunswick through the Atlantic Immigration Pilot;

4. Oversee client communications and billing related to trainings offered;

5. Work with VP, Newcomer and Community Connections to develop and monitor measurement tools (evaluations, metrics etc.) and report on effectiveness of training;

6. Provide research and planning support to the VP in the development of a multi-year Diversity and Inclusion Strategy for the YMCA of Greater Saint John;

7. Support the VP in the implementation of the Diversity and Inclusion Strategy, carrying out operational tasks as identified and ensuring benchmarks, milestones and goals are met;

8. Participate on the Diversity and Inclusion Working Group in an ex officio support role;

9. Support Senior Management in the development and roll-out of an audit process to ensure new and existing spaces are designed and improved with inclusivity in mind;

10. Provide information as required for internal/external reports, proposals, grants etc.;

11. Work closely with the Marketing and Communications Team to raise awareness and promote clear understanding about the importance of diversity in our community;

12. Attend community events where diversity messaging is key;

13. Participate in relevant stakeholder meetings and working groups, as assigned;

14. Foster clarity and collaboration among service providers.

15. Submit monthly expenses;

16. Attend and contribute to all staff meetings;

17. Perform other duties as assigned by the VP of Newcomer and Community Connections.

One part project manager and one part advocate, the successful candidate will possess a strong understanding and passion for diversity and inclusion, and will bring creative energy to the YMCA’s collaborative, fast-paced environment. They will have experience developing and implementing new plans, they will possess strong change-management skills, and they will be eager to create a more welcoming, inclusive culture in the Saint John region.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree, Community College diploma or similar from an accredited institution;
  • Must be fluent in English; knowledge of other languages is a great asset
  • Direct experience working with marginalized groups
  • Demonstrated success as a trainer or adult educator
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Exceptional organizational and inter-personal skills
  • Computer literate (MS Word, PPT, Prezi)
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • HR experience and/or volunteer experience will be considered an asset

  • As a full-time YMCA of Greater Saint John staff person, your hours of work and location may be adjusted due to programming needs. There is no guarantee of number of hours worked within a work week.
  • The YMCA of Greater Saint John has a Joint Health and Safety Committee which meets on a monthly basis to discuss health and safety within the workplace. Questions or concerns about your workplace must be brought forward to committee members.
  • In this role, you will be required to work in an environment which is often busy with high levels of noise.
  • As a YMCA of Greater Saint John staff person you are responsible for your own travel to and from work.
  • You are responsible for the member/client’s safety on a daily basis. You will be required to perform first aid and CPR when and if necessary and you are certified to do so.
  • You will be responsible to follow and abide by YMCA SAM 2.0 Standards, ensuring a clean and well maintained centre is required by all staff persons.
