A grocery store floor assistant (often called a floor clerk, retail associate, or team member) is primarily responsible for stocking shelves, maintaining product displays, and assisting customers directly on the shopping floor. They serve as the backbone of daily supermarket operations, ensuring the store is clean, organized, and easy for customers to navigate.
- Stocking & Merchandising: Unpack deliveries, check expiry dates, rotate older stock to the front (FIFO method), and organize display shelves.
- Customer Support: Greet shoppers, guide them to specific items, answer product availability questions, and occasionally carry heavy items to vehicles.
- Store Upkeep: Maintain clean aisles, sweep floors, flatten cardboard boxes, and ensure the shopping environment is safe and presentable.
- Inventory Control: Use handheld barcode scanners to track incoming items, verify price tags, and report missing or damaged inventory.
- Department Support: Depending on the shift, they may cross-train to help at the checkout lanes or prepare food items in departments like produce, meats.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Physical Stamina: Capability to stand, walk, and bend for an 8-hour shift, and lift loads usually up to 50 lbs.
- Strong Communication: Friendly attitude to handle customer complaints smoothly and work efficiently with team members.
- Attention to Detail: Eye for neatness to handle facing (pulling items to the front edge of the shelf) and identifying incorrect price tags.
- Experience: Most entry-level floor assistant positions require no prior retail experience as stores provide on-the-job training
Pay: $16.60-$20.00 per hour
