Reporting to the Human Resources Superintendent, the Payroll Specialist is responsible for the accurate and timely administration of payroll for hourly and salaried employees at site. This role requires exceptional attention to detail, a high level of accuracy in data entry, and demonstrated experience processing payroll within a unionized environment.
The successful candidate will ensure payroll is administered in strict accordance with applicable collective agreements, employment legislation, and company policies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & DELIVERABLES:
- Process full-cycle payroll (weekly and/or bi-weekly) with a high degree of accuracy
- Perform precise data entry of employee information, earnings, deductions, and adjustments
- Review, verify, and reconcile timecards and supervisor approvals
- Interpret and apply collective agreement provisions related to wages, overtime, shift premiums, statutory holidays, allowances, and benefit contributions
- Ensure payroll calculations align with union rates, job classifications, seniority provisions, and negotiated terms
- Audit payroll reports prior to submission to ensure accuracy and compliance
- Administer vacation accruals, benefits deductions, and payroll adjustments
- Prepare and submit Records of Employment (ROEs)
- BC Employment Standards Act
- Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requirements
- Applicable collective agreements
- Support onboarding by accurately setting up new hires in payroll systems according to union classifications
- Maintain detailed, organized, and confidential payroll records
- Respond to payroll inquiries professionally and in alignment with collective agreement language
- Support payroll audits and internal reporting processes
Qualifications
- 3+ years of payroll experience
- Demonstrated experience processing payroll in a unionized environment
- Strong understanding of collective agreement interpretation and application
- PCP designation (or working toward certification) preferred
- Strong knowledge of BC Employment Standards and payroll legislation
- Exceptional attention to detail and proven accuracy in high-volume data entry
- Proficiency in payroll systems (ADP or similar preferred)
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
- Ability to manage confidential information with discretion
- Experience in mining or heavy industrial environments considered an asset
