The School of Transportation (SOT) has been part of SAIT since its inception in 1916, with the original discipline of Motor Mechanics. Now, nearly 100 years later, we provide hands-on, practical education for automotive, aviation, heavy equipment and rail careers. Our state-of-the-art facilities include the Clayton Carroll Automotive Centre, the Art Smith Aero Centre, the Centre for Rail Training and Technology, and the RV Excellence Centre. is committed to providing learners with a high-quality education and in-demand skills.

We are currently accepting applications for motivated full-time Instructors to join our SOT team in late June 2019. The content you may instruct in are all areas of Heavy Equipment Technician as identified in the Heavy Equipment Technician trade curriculum. Programs you may deliver this content include Heavy Equipment Technician apprenticeship and Diesel Equipment Technician Certificate.

Reporting to the Academic Chair of each respective program, the Instructor is accountable for promoting a positive and interactive learning environment with hands-on learning. In addition, you will work with students and faculty by attending recruitment initiatives and school events, and maintain strong industry relationships. You enjoy a challenge, possess strong technical skills and are an excellent communicator who works well in a collaborative team environment.

Note: This is an adjunct position with an end date of June 30, 2020. Possibility for extension.

Job Description

Instruct high level courses to mature learners
Prepare and present lectures and labs
Develop course outlines, profiles and curriculum
Participate in curriculum and program reviews
Prepare additional study and lab materials for learners
Evaluate student progress and achievement
Provide ongoing support, guidance and advice to learners
Maintain close contact with relevant industry sectors
Perform related duties as assigned to meet the emerging needs of SAIT and its Students

Must hold a Journey-person Certificate as a Heavy Equipment Technician with a Red Seal
Prior teaching experience is an asset
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the Heavy Equipment repair industry
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
Intermediate level proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook and PowerPoint
Strong time management and organizational skills
Aptitude for mentoring and coaching others
Comfortable with public speaking, and able to convey course subjects to diverse students and learning styles
Possess a positive, respectful attitude, and a high commitment to student success and collaboration
