IT Student - Business Applications and AI (Contract)
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The City of Orillia has an exciting opportunity for a University Student or a recent graduate in Information Technology (IT) or Business Student who will work directly with the Manager of Information Technology for approximately four to six months in the Business Development, Tourism and Modernization Division of the Corporate Services Department.
The emphasis for this position is to use modern technology such as the Microsoft Power Suite, AI tools etc. to improve and automate business processes and solve business problems. The position provides the opportunity to work across all disciplines within Information Technology and all municipal departments. The position will have the opportunity to build a network of vendor and municipal contacts.
The City does not use artificial intelligence in the hiring process. All job applications are reviewed personally by the appropriate Department/Division. This is an existing position that is currently vacant.
DUTIES:
- Perform research, make recommendations and converse with experts on a wide range of Information Technology topics including leveraging Office 365 for new and innovative business processes.
- Build no-code/low-code tools using Microsoft Power Automate, Power Apps, Power Bi, SharePoint lists or internal ERP workflow tools to streamline business processes.
- Maintain the City’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) data bank and update the AI Guideline and reports.
- Write briefs, prepare business cases and perform presentations to the Senior Management team regarding recommendations on future IT strategy, products and approaches.
- Gather business requirements and document existing business processes. Liaise with other municipalities to determine best practices.
- Work with other Business Units to optimize and automate business processes using Business Process Optimization techniques.
- Design custom reports and perform business analysis using tools such as SQL queries, Group Policies, PowerShell scripts, and dashboards (e.g., Power BI) for business decision-making and data cleansing/migration.
- Perform Project Management Tasks including the documentation of requirements, and the installation of new equipment and software.
- Work as a member of the I.T. team to provide technical support to the organization.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Currently enrolled in, or a graduate of a university program with in one or more of the following fields of study: Computer Science, Information Management, Information Science, Computer Engineering Technology, or Business with a keen interest in information technology.
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office products including excel and word. Familiarity with other Microsoft products such as Teams, SharePoint, and the Power Suite would be an asset.
- Artificial intelligence knowledge or completion of AI courses is an asset.
- Knowledge of research and forecasting techniques.
- Exceptional attention to detail, writing, interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work independently and as a team.
- Experience charting workflows and flowcharts for process improvement.
- Must possess a valid class ‘G’ Ontario driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle.
- The successful candidate will be required to provide a current and acceptable Criminal Record Check, at their expense, prior to the employment commencement date.
Compensation for this position is $20.24 per hour for up to 35 hours per week, with flexibility based on the successful candidate’s availability for a contract period of approximately 4 to 6 months.
