Position Summary
Port Alberni Shelter Society is seeking compassionate, reliable, and motivated individuals to join our Therapeutic Recovery Community as a Mentor/Support Workers. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about supporting individuals in recovery, fostering personal growth, and contributing to a healthy, purpose-driven community environment.
Mentor/Support Workers play a key role in providing encouragement, accountability, and practical support to participants as they work toward recovery, wellness, and greater independence. Successful candidates will model healthy living, maintain professional boundaries, and actively participate in community life while supporting residents in developing the skills needed for long-term recovery and independent living.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a positive role model and life mentor for community members.
- Build supportive and professional relationships while maintaining healthy boundaries.
- Encourage personal responsibility, recovery goals, and healthy lifestyle choices.
- Support participants in daily living activities and community engagement.
- Transport residents to medical, dental, and other essential appointments.
- Help residents connect with physicians, healthcare providers, and other community resources.
- Provide medication reminders and support residents in following prescribed treatment plans while promoting personal responsibility and independence.
- Assist with conflict resolution and promote a respectful, recovery-focused environment.
- Support, encourage, and mentor residents in completing therapeutic social enterprise activities, including farming, gardening, baking, and other work-based programs.
- Foster independence, responsibility, and skill development by guiding residents to actively participate in daily tasks rather than completing tasks for them.
- Use work-based activities as opportunities to teach life skills, accountability, teamwork, and recovery-focused habits.
- Observe, document, and communicate participant progress and concerns as required.
- Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and community partners.
- Ensure safety, program standards, and organizational policies are followed.
Qualifications & Skills
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and support individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong understanding of healthy boundaries, professional ethics, and confidentiality.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills.
- Ability to motivate, encourage, and inspire positive change.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
- Understanding of recovery-oriented, strengths-based, and trauma-informed approaches is an asset.
- Lived experience in recovery or overcoming significant life challenges is considered an asset.
- Comfortable supporting residents in therapeutic social enterprise activities and skill-building opportunities.
Requirements
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
- Ability to safely transport residents to appointments and community activities.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
- Current First Aid certification.
- Ability to work flexible casual shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
