THE ROLE:
Robert Half is partnering with a respected nonprofit organization to identify an experienced Interim Controller for a key leadership contract opportunity. Reporting to senior leadership, the Interim Controller will oversee the organization's accounting operations, prepare accurate financial reporting for both internal and external stakeholders, and provide leadership to a small finance team. The successful candidate will play an important role in delivering board-ready financial information, supporting government reporting requirements, managing budgeting activities, and assisting with financial and operational initiatives across the organization.
Key responsibilities include:
Prepare monthly, mid-year, and year-end financial statements in accordance with NPO accounting standards and the deferral method of accounting
Deliver financial reporting and insights to the Board of Directors, senior leadership, and government stakeholders
Lead monthly close processes and support year-end and budget cycle activities
Develop annual budgets, forecasts, and financial models to support organizational planning
Perform scenario analysis and provide recommendations related to funding, compensation, and operational changes
Oversee accounting operations, financial controls, and continuous process improvements
Supervise and mentor a small finance team while supporting cross-functional collaboration
Act as the finance lead for financial systems and workflows, including SharePoint approval processes and related technology initiatives
Partner with leadership on strategic projects and organizational decision-making

YOUR SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
CPA designation or equivalent
5+ years of progressive full-cycle accounting experience, including Controller-level responsibilities
Strong knowledge of financial statement preparation, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
Experience presenting financial information to boards, executives, government agencies, and non-financial stakeholders
Leadership experience managing and developing staff
Advanced Excel skills, including financial modeling, Power Query, and lookup functions
Proficiency with Sage 50, SharePoint, or similar financial systems
Strong communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills
Ability to balance hands-on accounting responsibilities with strategic financial leadership
Experience with nonprofit accounting and grant or government-funded reporting is considered an asset
