The Forest and Natural Areas Management (FNAM) program and the Fish, Wildlife and Recreation (FWR) diploma program are broad-based, current and practical two-year diploma programs which is part of the Renewable Resources Department at BCIT that also includes the Ecological Restoration degree programs.
The FNAM program trains graduates for employment in the range of fields including industrial forestry, urban forestry, silviculture, arboriculture and natural resources management. Graduates are eligible for registration as Registered Forest Technologists (RFT) in British Columbia and have a number of available pathways to other levels of certification and education. The FWR program is designed to give students a broad range of applied skills, experiences and knowledge for careers in the dynamic and diverse field of resource management. The program provides learning opportunities for students to identify, inventory and monitor fish and wildlife species in British Columbia and the habitats they use.
The department is seeking an enthusiastic and team-oriented regular, part-time Instructor (0.50 FTE) to teach a variety of courses within the FNAM program, as well as the FWR program, that may include Plant Identification, Earth Science and Soils, Terrestrial Ecosystems and Classification, Forest Management, Principles of Urban Forestry and Arboriculture and assisting with capstone applied research projects (Technical Projects 1 & 2). Instructional emphasis is on helping students develop applied skills based on a foundation of knowledge required for technologists in resource management. The successful candidate should have a diverse forestry and natural resource management background with strong field skills, and preferably experience in soil science, plant identification and arboriculture.
Duties & Responsibilities
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Providing support for course-and program-level applied learning including training students in field skills (including equipment use).
Organizing field-trip logistics.
Assisting with students in developing applied research projects, and participating in course development.
Experience in operational forestry, urban forest management, and new technologies in forestry is a significant advantage.
The position will require supporting several all-day or week-long field trips, as well as assisting with program management (e.g., promoting the FNAM and FWR programs, organizing field trips, program revisions).
Other responsibilities will be based on the strengths of successful candidate and the needs of the program, such as program/course development and course instruction.
Bachelor’s degree in forestry or a related natural resource management discipline.
Professional designation or eligibility to register as a professional at the time of hiring (e.g. RPF, RFT, RPBio, RPAg, ISA Cert. Arb.).
Minimum 5 years of recent field and/or operational experience in the course areas listed above.
Strong candidates with other combinations of post-secondary education and experience may be considered.
Proficiency in the latest technology used by forest technologists and natural resource managers.
A class 4 driver’s license or the ability to obtain one upon hiring.
Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to effectively teach at the post-secondary level in classroom, field and online settings.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team, being flexible and adaptable to meet the needs and challenges of a dynamic program.

Salary Range $53,566 to $93,828 per annum.
Additional Salary Information
Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
