Working for the Department of Renewable Resources
The "SWAMP Lab" of the Department of Renewable Resources is an ultra-clean laboratory and mass spectrometry facility focused on environmental analytical chemistry. This lab studies the sources, transformations, behaviour and fate of trace elements in soils, waters, air, manures and plants (SWAMP).
Position
This full-time laboratory technician will assist with the day-to-day operations of the Lab under the direction of the Principle Investigator and senior laboratory staff. This position is expected to perform a variety of semi-complex tasks defined by the established standard operating procedures of the Lab.
Duties
Sample Preparation and Analysis (60%)

Preparation of samples for analysis

Analysis of samples using ICP-MS and field flow fractionation
-
Conducts experiments using established SOPs
-
Assists with testing of experimental techniques
-
Makes recommendations regarding modifications/improvements to SOPs
-
Participates in training of students and PDFs on lab techniques and safe equipment operation
Data Management and Analysis (30%)

Compiles data
-
Performs preliminary data analysis and interpretation
-
Performs QA/QC on data
General Lab Work (10%)

Maintains inventory of lab supplies, including record-keeping and purchasing

Performs general lab maintenance, including equipment repair and upkeep

Maintains records and logs
-
Manages waste disposal and tracking
Qualifications
-
BSc in Analytical Chemistry or closely- related field; MSc preferred; PhD welcome

General knowledge of analytical equipment
-
Understanding of analytical chemistry coupled with hands-on lab experience

Experience with ICP-MS and an understanding of its purpose in the environmental field

Experience with acid digestion procedures

Experience with trace metal analysis and clean lab procedures an asset

Respect for lab safety and ability to work following safety rules

Strong organizational skills

Strong attention to detail with effective communication skills

Strong MS Office suite skills
