Job Overview
The Thoracic Nurse Practitioner (NP) serves as a key leadership figure within a multidisciplinary and inter-professional team dedicated to thoracic care. This NP works closely with thoracic surgeons, pulmonologists, oncologists, and other healthcare professionals to provide care for patients with various thoracic conditions, including lung and esophageal diseases, supporting both medical and surgical management. We are recruiting for a dedicated professional that will work within our Surgical Program, in both an inpatient and outpatient capacity.
Primary Responsibilities
- The NP works both independently and collaboratively with physicians, healthcare teams, patients, and families, ensuring care is evidence-informed and aligns with professional, ethical, and legal standards.
- As a leader, the NP plays a critical role in improving practice standards, advancing the scope of thoracic nursing, and supporting the development of team members within the Thoracic Program.
- The NP contributes to the education of patients, families, and health professionals by sharing knowledge about thoracic care, health promotion, and recovery strategies.
- The NP is involved in the implementation and evaluation of research to improve patient outcomes, thoracic treatment strategies, and overall care delivery models
- Utilize advanced clinical skills to assess, plan, and facilitate care for thoracic patients, with a focus on managing conditions such as lung cancer, esophageal disorders, and post-thoracic surgery care.
- Perform comprehensive health assessments and complete focused physical examinations, identifying normal and abnormal findings relevant to patient presentations.
- Use diagnostic reasoning to order and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., CT scans, X-rays, pulmonary function tests), establishing medical diagnoses within the thoracic specialty.
- Conduct comprehensive history-taking, perform physical examinations, and carry out interval assessments for thoracic patients, ensuring all relevant health data is collected.
- Collaborate with patients and families to develop a comprehensive, multidisciplinary plan of care, coordinating resources for optimal patient outcomes.
- Performs specialty-specific diagnostic and therapeutic interventions in accordance with scope of practice, approved medical directives for controlled acts and established practice guidelines.
- Maintain accurate and thorough documentation, including patient admissions, progress notes, and discharge summaries, ensuring clear and comprehensive records for the health team.
- Provide leadership in developing educational programs focused on thoracic conditions and surgeries, ensuring that the content is relevant, and evidence based.
- Offer educational opportunities to nursing, medical, and allied health staff in collaboration with the Nurse Educator, aimed at enhancing specialized knowledge and skills in thoracic care.
- Mentor and preceptor nursing and interdisciplinary students, providing guidance and evaluating their clinical performance in thoracic care settings to foster their professional development.
- Engage with academic institutions to participate in joint research and educational projects, promoting collaboration between clinical practice and academia to advance thoracic care.
- Support the development, implementation and evaluation of quality management programs / initiatives, care delivery models, practice standard / guidelines / policies and procedures and associated health outcomes and resource utilization, in collaboration with the leadership teams.
- Demonstrate clinical leadership as a change agent through knowledge translation and dissemination, including formal and informal presentations, publications, and quality improvement projects.
- Collaborate with staff physicians or independently engage in the research process, including conducting, analyzing, collecting, documenting, interpreting, and implementing research findings to improve thoracic care.
- Performs other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.
Skills & Abilities
- Minimum 5 years of recent and relevant Registered Nurse experience in thoracic, cardiothoracic, respiratory, and/or critical care.
- Minimum 3 years of recent Nurse Practitioner experience in thoracic, cardiothoracic, or pulmonary care preferred.
- Experience with thoracic surgeries, lung and esophageal diseases, and post-surgical recovery.
- Demonstrated ability to manage pre- and post-operative care for thoracic patients, including medication and symptom management.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with physicians and the inter-professional team.
- Highly developed assessment, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Strong oral, written, and presentation skills, including proficiency in healthcare information systems.
- Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple competing demands.

Qualifications
- Registered Nurse in Extended Class (RN, EC) in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
- Current registration with the CNO in the Extended Class (EC) as an NP (Adult) or NP (Primary Health Care).
- Master of Nursing or Master of Science in Nursing with successful completion of a Nurse Practitioner program from a recognized institution.
- Critical care or thoracic oncology certification or equivalent preferred.
- Basic Cardio Life Saving (BCLS) certification required.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
- Active membership in the Canadian Nurses Association and Nurse Practitioner Association of Ontario or other relevant professional organizations preferred.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $64.85-$77.42 per hour
