Then come join our team at the Nova Scotia Department of Municipal Affairs and Housing Building Infrastructure and Asset Management (BIAM) and help transform Public Housing for seniors and families across Nova Scotia.

The department is comprised of a team of Engineers, Architects, and a variety of Building Technicians. We oversee and coordinate the facility repairs, maintenance and greening upgrades of over 2,500 buildings (12 million ft2) on behalf of the 5 Regional Housing Authorities across Nova Scotia. With a budget of over $20million we identify, prioritize, and execute over 400 repair projects annually on a variety of senior and family residential facilities from high rise and low-rise apartment buildings, row houses and 1,2,3 and 4 Unit family homes.

About Our Opportunity

We are accepting applications for our next Engineering Student Program term. This is also an exciting opportunity to advance your professional development through hands-on experience, training, and mentorship from highly qualified professionals. To be eligible for this program, candidates must provide proof of status as a full-time student and be scheduled to return to an accredited post-secondary institution after the work term.

Primary Accountabilities

Using Engineering principles, the student will conduct a variety of engineering analysis on various projects in the areas of Senior and Public Housing. Students will participate in on-site review and analysis of facilities; liaising with project teams; and reviewing standards and specifications related to such a variety of residential building design requirements. The student will also fill in for vacancies during any vacation periods as required. Office duties related to contract administration could be a component of the position.

In addition to conducting a variety of engineering analysis, the student may have opportunities to support project teams in the:

development of project documents including drawings, specifications, reports.
tracking of building performance, project status and documentation of project completion.

Qualifications and Experience

You are a Dalhousie University Bachelor of Engineering student and returning to school in the fall (or in the next applicable semester for the education program).

Travel throughout your assigned area may be required, as such, you have a valid driver license. Access to a reliable motor vehicle would be an asset.

You must also be:
Proficient in mathematics and drafting
Familiar with computer software packages used in an engineering environment
Organized and able to prioritize your work
An excellent communicator who provides professional customer service
Interested in energy consumption, building science and construction methods

The following are considered assets including:
Familiarity with construction sites, as well as construction design standards
Familiarity with contract specifications
Basic knowledge of codes and standards related to energy efficiency

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

About half of your work is outdoors in various weather conditions, with considerable travel throughout your assigned area.

Pay Grade: HOURLY

Salary Range: $16.75 - $27.30 Hourly
